I'm finally flying out on Tuesday, at which point my overstay will have reached 28 days. Not too bright, I know.. I was only planning to overstay for less than a week, which was cheaper than a visa run, so it made sense. Then a few more days, then a few more.. Before I knew it, I was at over 2 weeks, which was still around the same price range as a visa run would have cost me, so I figured I was breaking even. I kept getting delayed by a few days at a time, so 3 weeks just passed and there are no flights until Tuesday, at which point I'll be at 28 days, or 14,000 baht (28 * 500). Ouch. Well, lesson learned I guess. But am I going to be ok at the airport - I mean, do I just pay the 14k and go? They won't detain me or anything, will they? I'm pretty worried. I really shouldn't have overstayed.

You pay 14,000 at th eairport, make a note in your passport that you overstayed and you will indeed be on your way.

Just make sure you check in early and go straight to immigration, as it can be bussy and you will need to take care of the overstay.

Is there anyway to "pay extra" to avoid the overstay stamp? :)

I guess you could "pay extra" by getting a new passport when you get back to your home country. It won't appear in that.

Doesn't matter one way or the other as the information will be in the immigration system anyways (they record your entry / exit dates and visa types) so they can act on it whenever they feel like it.

However so far nobody has ever been bothered, even having overstay stamps on almost every passport page.

It doesn't matter so far for Thai immigration, but depending on nationality, other countries can be reluctant to grant someone who has been on overstay a visa or entry, even if the overstay was in another country.
