Russia is reportedly supplying battlefield intelligence to Iran that could help Tehran target American forces across the Middle East — even as the administration of Donald Trump eases sanctions on Russian energy exports. A new report by The Wall Street Journal says Moscow has provided Iran with satellite imagery, targeting intelligence and upgraded drone technology during the escalating war with United States and Israel. Officials cited in the report say the intelligence includes details on the location of American troops and allied military assets across the region, potentially improving the accuracy of Iranian drone and missile strikes. Analysts say the support mirrors the type of intelligence sharing Western countries have provided to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Drone warfare expertise shared Sources told the newspaper that Moscow has also shared battlefield lessons from its war in Ukraine, advising Iran on how to deploy its drones more effectively. That includes guidance on launch tactics, altitude profiles and how many drones to deploy during coordinated attacks. Iran’s drone programme — particularly its use of Shahed drones — has become a central weapon in its confrontation with Israel and US forces. Former CIA analyst Jim Lamson said detailed satellite imagery could dramatically improve Iranian targeting. “If there are details about aircraft types, munitions depots, air defences or naval movements, that intelligence could be extremely valuable,” he said. Sanctions decision raises questions The revelations come as Washington quietly loosened restrictions on Russian oil exports. Last week the Trump administration temporarily lifted sanctions on tankers carrying Russian crude at sea, allowing shipments to reach global buyers in an attempt to stabilise soaring energy prices driven by the Iran war. Trump has acknowledged Russia may be assisting Iran “a bit”, but officials insist Moscow has not shared information directly linked to US drone strike operations.
