OK, I needed this done. My barber wanted to stick a pole in there for 500 baht but that was a no go. I definitely wanted the high tech method with a suction machine and camera. So I dropped by Pattaya International Hospital which does have ear nose threat specialists and asked if they had a machine to remove wax. They said no. This really surprised me to hear at an expat oriented hospital (the other way is a manual method) and not sure if its really true that they don't have a suction machine but decided not to bother to pay a consultation to find out. So, predictably, I ended up at Bangkok Pattaya Hospital which had a machine, a kind of burnt out doctor (but who wouldn't be sucking wax out of foreigners heads all day?) and a predictably extortionate bill, 2500 baht!

I won't need this again for a long time, but just curious, where else in town is there an ear/nose/throat doctor who has a suction machine? Other hospitals, clinics, etc.?

That's good if you don't have a real blockage that caused hearing loss. Sometimes you really need a doctor, thank you very much.

5 Years ago Pattayta International Hospital had a suction machine .I had to make two visits .First time they gave me drops to soften the wax ,then after several days of this i got everything out with the suction machine .It greatly improved my hearing .

That's interesting. They may still have one but I did ask the desk and they took the trouble of asking someone else, but of course they could have been wrong, or didn't understand the concept of machine. Maybe someone else who has been there more recently can say for sure. I reckon it would be at least a little cheaper than BHP.

I had read that sometimes docs do loosening first, but in my case they didn't and it was declared all clear and it certainly SOUNDS all clear.

I don't think that is medically recommended but happy to hear you haven't been injured by that.

i never heard of using olive oil but that sounds like a good idea. In the past i bought a earwax removal kit which had a bottle of something, no clue whats in it, and a little turkey baster looking thing, similar to what is used to suck the snot out of an infants nose. You loosen with the solution, or olive oil, the gently flush with warm water using the turkey baster. I did have a complete blockage and this worked just fine without visiting a doctor.

Can't you go to a recommended clinic?

I know this isnt much help, as i cant remember the name of the particular clinic i went to on Second Road last time i needed "dewaxing"

They did it in similar fashion to what my GP does............warm water flushed in. I think i prefer that to the suction method. They might suck what little brains i got out too !!!!

Works well and much cheaper than a trip to the hospital and pretty safe as well.

A few years ago I had some problems with the ears. I could hear well only with one ear. I decided to go to a barber to clean the ears. After the visit I could hear almost nothing anymore with both ears.

I went to the Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok where the ears were suctioned clean with a machine for about 1000 bath. Since then no more problems.

In the past I was advised to use some oil now and then to soften the earwax before cleaning. Any kind of oil would do.

Bangkok Pattaya Hospital have an Ear/Nose/Throat section. I had mine done there 2 years ago by a professional. Dont take chances with quacks. You dont get a second chance.

When I first arrived in Thailand full time, I went to a hospital in BKK, with same problem... I cannot remember the name, but it cost me 600 baht for cleaning by an ENT with some "high tech" sucking gismo... plus some drops...

My western doctor use to use a large syringe with warm water.... at least twice a year... Since the Thai Hospital visit, 3.5 years ago, I've not had to have it done again since!

Use Olive oil occasionally, that is quite safe...on a Q tip..... just don't stick it too far into the ear!

I had this done at Pattaya Memorial just the other week, 1400baht, sucked both ears dry there and then, I have it done about every 18 months.

I wouldn't stick anything in your ear at all, even a Q-tip. By the way I think my problem may have started/aggravated by my barber pushing an electric nose hair clipper into my ear. The doc said there was she saw hair mixed in there with the wax which made it harder to remove and she accurately blamed a clipper. Hair doesn't grow in the ear canals. Another thing to keep in mind, some wax is good and normal. There isn't a reason to clean in there periodically like teeth cleaning unless there is a problem. Wax keeps out insects among other things.

BPH has them I go every few months, in between I use hydrogen peroxide and a bulb filled with water to clean

Slightly off topic - sorry Jing - but my ear specialist always told me the smallest thing you should stick in your ear is your elbow.

Q tips and similar do help compact the wax. As Jingthing said, there was also hair in the wax too and that compounded the problem. Have the long hairs plucked from your ears one by one and then you will not have the hair in the wax problem Jingthing had.

I cannot have my ears suctioned because my eardrums are perforated due to childhood illness. I have to take care swimming too because of the perforations. Added to that the risk of fluid build up, please do not let the barber do the job for you. You might regret it long term.
