Featured Replies

Metabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance, Syndrome X - same thing.

Does anyone know about it?

Does anyone know any doctors in Thailand who treat it?

Yes, know about. Have it myself to some extent.

Dr. Surat Komindr at Bangkok Hospital

Friday 16:00 - 18:00

Saturday 14:00 - 16:00 (1st & 3rd Sats of each month only)

is one of the leading experts on it in Thailand.

Thanks. Those of us in middle age and older probably all have it, to some extent.

Does Dr Surat advocate diet as a means of addressing the syndrome? If so, what type?

(For those viewing this post, it is estimated that 50% of the older population in the US have metabolic syndrome. Google it, and "insulin resistance" to find more information.)

I have not consulted him, I've been dealing with it on my own. But certainly any health professional will advise avoidance of processed carbohydrates.

For me, avoidance of processed carbs alone wasn't enough, in part because intense cravings for them made it hard to stick to, especially at night, and it was always worst after eating a full, healthy meal. So I have recently started on a low does of metformin, works wonders in eliminating the cravings but is giving me trouble in terms of gastric side effects. I plan to see if I can find an enteric coated form or else may try acarbose instead. (While still sticking to a no-processed carb regime).

Note that I am a health professional, and while it is often said that we should not try to treat ourselves, we are at least well positioned to research and understand a drug's pharamacology, contraindications, potential adverse effects etc. and relate it to our own medical history. Non-medical people would be better advised to consult a physician.
