John Lennon

Featured Replies

First gotta say I love Lennons work, he was a great muscian and songwriter, and no one can doubt that but I have recent;y read a biography of him and he just comes across as such a prick.

I'm talking kidnapping, wife beating, violence, spoilt nature etc. this book describes him as all that and more.

The book I read is meant to be one of the better biographies on him so I assume it does have some substance

Just wondering if anybody else knew about his life and had an opinion, as the image I grew up with of this peace loving guy who loved music is far different from the image of this brutal man as portrayed in the book.

I'd rather not read the book. I'd rather remember all the interviews with him that I saw on TV in the 60's. Nobody's perfect - I'm sure he shagged quite a few of the groupies, did drugs, etc. And if you or I had the chance in those days.... :o

We knew the Lennons.

Cynthia Lennon, John’s first wife lived next door-but-one to my Gran.

And quite coincidently, Cynthia and Julian (John’s son) lived next door to my sister in Wales, for a while after the divorce.

John was everything all fans and any biographers could imagine (!) dominated by one prime psychological flaw. A flaw that only in his later years he was beginning to come to terms with.

He suffered from the effects of maternal deprivation.

There is a least one Gentleman on Thaivisa who has had a similar experience.

He too has not been reticent in displaying some of the conflicts caused by this trauma.

The groupies and drugs I don't care about, thats rock and roll man, I mean who wouldn't?

But the wife beating, the kidnapping, the sheer brutal force of this man to anyone who was in disagreement with him....... :D

I would rather hope this thread is not used to bash other TV members as I started it purely for the purpose of discussing John Lennon himself. Please respect that TM.

As much as everyone knows he had issues with 'mother' do you think as a person and not a muscian he was a prick or not? Is he a person worth admiration for the non musical side of life?

Yep - I'd rather not know. I was gutted when I found out what an a-hole Peter Sellers was. Recently I found out that Barry Crump was a real nasty b'stard too. Gutted.

It's a shame really. Fame can effect some celebrities that way, others are just naturally born tossers.

I'm not knocking anyone.

The gentleman referred to is fully aware of his condition.

Maternal deprivation is a serious, and very sad, psychological trauma that can often cause apparent illogical actions.

Besides, I think you ought to, as someone has noted, cut JL some slack, not only because he was a Scouser, but because he was a human being, with human flaws.

When you have lived a little longer you just might learn no matter how talented or not, you or anyone else may be, nobody is perfect, in fact far from it.

More evil things pass through the minds of men and women just before they fall asleep than you, or John Lennon, could possibly imagine.

Anyway, listen to the music, anything else is bullshiit.

When you have lived a little longer you just might learn no matter how talented or not, you or anyone else may be, nobody is perfect, in fact far from it.

I am 36, how long have I got before this great insight hits me and I join the realm of those who see the truth?

Profound stuff indeed, though a bit condescending.

When you don't feel the need to enquire after John Lennon's or anyone else's private life - and make judgements about someone you do not know such as inferring they are a prick.

Especially when you know the only prick is TM.

I think we all knew he was a flawed genius. I personally couldn't stomache that whole lovein/sleepin thing he pulled with Yoko, but it's all about the music.

It has to be said TM, I knew people were far from perfect and very flawed since I was very young, I don't know what age you finally got the wisdom but its always been pretty clear to me.

Anyway, back on topic.

Okay so I understand you saying this like you said everyone is far from perfection. However I haven't personaly read the biography Maddy is speaking about but he mentioned some of what it contained.

How far can you go with cutting him some slack for these types of traits? I won't be so quick to judge a man I don't and will not know but surely you can not leave all these traits down to human flaws.

I see you mentioning maternal deprivation. After studying this for some time during college not all victims to maternal deprivation develop these traits so I guess you are making an assumption here. Unless you know something I don't?

I know I may only be a young college graduate but I am not implying in anyway I have more knowledge than yourself of anyone else for that matter. This wasn't and isn't a rant at you. Just some opinion sharing.

:D:D:D

BKK Madness :D Just for you

Imagine” being in a “Norwegian Wood” trying to create a “Revolution” “In My Life” to achieve “Instant Karma” and with “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and then singing “I am the Walrus” in “Strawberry Fields Forever” thinking to oneself “A Day in the Life” without “Mother

Now that was J.L. me think :o

Read it all here and more

Yours truly, :D

Kan Win :D

P.S. me think he is still playing "Mind Games" with us all :D:D:D

In answer to your original question. Yep, the guy was a prick. A very famous prick. But just cos he was a fantastic Musician, Songwriter etc doesn't stop him being a prick. Just the same as Elvis was. IMHO

When looking at any historical figure – and John Lennon is historic (there’s even an airport named after him) – you have to consider the nature of the times in which he lived.

There have been great advances in the last three decades in social and inter-personal awareness. A lot of these advances have been a result of strenuous political activity by groups such as the women’s movement or gay groups.

Many of these changes in attitude receive derogatory labels on Thaivisa such as “PC”. This is not surprising as a large majority of members flee to Thailand primarily because these attitudes threaten their male dominated view of society. Here they take comfort in what their money can buy and the indifference of a society that is often plagued by problems far worse than the activists fought against in other countries.

Having said that: Lennon was a product of his time and, although being a prime mover for change, he was psychological and socially immersed in what were – though never talked about – the (not at that time) so unusual reactions to stress and conflict within human relations.

He may have done the things he has been accused of, but so did many men who had the chance, over 30 years ago.

Some of these men can be seen sitting in bars in Thailand.

Just as well we all have our own opinions, but hey, whatever floats your boat :o

Do you think he really was a prime mover for change Thomas as it seems like he just become Yokos puppet after his move to America? He also seemed to drop his political views quite easily when it come to sorted out his immigration status for living in America.

The most shocking thing I read about him was his part in the attempted kidnap of Yoko's daughter Kyoko from her natural father. There was also evidence of his support of the IRA wasn't there?

Why is it that both Lennon and McCartney seemed to lose it after the Beatles. Imagine was tolerable, Band on the Run execrable. Together they made great music.

Don't know, and quite frankly don't care.

All I know is, no Englishman has ever sung Rock 'n Roll better than John Lennon, both before or after his untimely death.

The only Americans who came close were heroes of Johns - e.g. Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

EDIT//

Don't forget that "All you need is Love" was probably the pivotal song for a whole generation.

As I said at the start, not knocking his music at all, I think not many people could.

Just surprised that he is often seen like a saint like figure for peace and harmony when he was not like it at all in real life.

If you don't know and don't care, perhaps this is the wrong topic for you? :o
