I'm not sure if this is the right place to post it... but I am getting married in Thailand next week. I know the documents I'm needing for it. I'm form the USA and my fiance is Thai... but I'm wondering if anyone knows... can I bring the documents from the USA to Thailand? Or do I have to apply for them at the embassy for sure after I get there? I was just wondering if it would save any time with all the papers and documents if I had them already or if they would require it all take place in Thailand. Does anyone know? Thanks for anyone who replies. :D

I kinda doubt if U.S. "documents" would really be acceptable at the amphur where you'll be married. Reckon the staffs are pretty well used to what they see in the normal course of events, and this seems to be an affidavit from your embassy, translated, and chopped off by the Min of Foreign Affairs.

Doesn't really seem like that much of a hassle to get the paperwork done here.

Do you mean a marriage license? If so no, an American marriage license can only be filled out by an officiant in the state which it was issued. If you need an international marriage certificate to register in the USA, contact: Chiang Mai CPE http://www.chiangmaicpe.org/ it is free.

Hmmmm....can you tell us what is the reason for getting married in Thailand? Are you planning to live here? Are you trying to get your fiance back to the US via a marriage visa? If it is the latter, let's move this over to the visa forum for advise. I know when I went through this, the fiance visa was the recommended approach by the embassy in Bangkok. We got married in Thailand, but it was just a ceremony...the actual marriage occurred once we were in the US.

Yeah we are planning on moving to the USA. Everyone I've spoken with recommended we get married in the foreign country first because it's easier... I guess the visa forum would work better. :) I was just wondering if the freedom for marriage license and what not I'm supposed to have need to be done in Thailand or not. We are also going to see his family and I would rather spend more time with them than in offices registering things which is why I asked. I know it's already a short process... but just wondering if it can be done in 1 day and have the rest to be with his family.

A licence to get married? Never heard of such a stupid thing. A licence to drive yes but a licence to get married sounds like a dictatorship.

You need the letter from the embassy, and if you are divorced the divorce papers.

Once you have the letter from the embassy, you have to have it translated and next you go to the Thai Foreign Ministry, Consulair Affairs department to have it certified by them. That is difficult to do in 1 day, but possible if you time it well.

Otherwise the translation agency can take care of the Consular Department part for you, for a price of course.

The translation should cost about 300-400 baht. Same day service at Consular department costs 800 baht, normal service 400 baht.

I know when I went through this back in 2004, the embassy there told me it was easier to get her to the US if we were NOT married. A fiance visa being easier to obtain than a marriage visa...go figure.

I would highly recommend contacting the embassy in Bangkok. I went and visited them in person and also communicated with them via email during this process. They were pretty good in working with us.

I recently went through this .... (last month)

First go on-line to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate depending if your north or

south

Down load the affidavit to marry certificate (make 2 or 3 copies)

Then on-line set up an appointment. It is usually 10 days - 2 weeks out.

Arrive with the form filled out and your passport as well as your appointment paper

Don't sign it (I did and that is why I was happy I had extra copy with

me)

pay about 1550 Bt. and they give you a stamped affidavit to marry.

Next step, have it translated to Thai

They will have it sent off to be stamped in Thai.

This usually take a week or 10 days for it to be returned to you

when you have this paper you go to the local Amphor and get married,

Bring your Passport and she her ID card

all in all a little over 4000 Bt. But good for US and Thailand

If you want it registered in US, then those papers have to be translated to

English and registered at the Embassy or Consulate

Easy, but a few hoops to jump through

I take it the OP is a lady so does it work out any different for someone to go to the US if they married in Thailand e.g. US male married to Thai lady or vice-versa,?

It makes no difference if male or female (if of age).

The US Embassy has openings for appointments for notarizations next day so no problem getting an appointment (which just saves the queue time).

The whole process can be done in one day but best to allow two unless using a service.

The translations is done in minutes and the registration at MFA can also be done same day - it should never, ever, take a week to ten days - next day would be entirely normal.

Registration at District Office takes about an hour. That is an official marriage. You do not register or otherwise report this to US Embassy (that Thai paperwork is official worldwide) but it is best to have it translated into English and registered at MFA as you did the Embassy document - then if required for a US reason later it is an official legal document.

As for US immigrant visa process they are supposed to be about the same time period for fiancée or marriage but it varies by the US area office required to be used.

This is all really helpful everyone! thank you! I do have a question about using a service though... what kind of service do I use? Or that you were referring to? It would be REALLY awesome to get it done in one day if possible. And yes I am a female falang and he is Thai. I guess it doesn't matter... but in case anyone was confused.

Might sound stupid young man, but just wait until you get older and maybe want to get married.

You will find out it does exists.

Believe many of the translation service places also act for full service. If you were doing a hotel reception then that would likely have contact to do for you. But other than the run to MFA for legalization there is not much that anyone can do without you present and as what you have to do is basically say yes and sign a couple papers there is not much purpose in paying large amounts for nothing.
