Keane became the first player from Britain or Ireland to score 50 senior international goals when bagging a double in his country's 2-0 win over Macedonia in Skopje.

The previous benchmark of 49 was held by Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton.

Keane plundered his 50th and 51st international goals in the eighth and 37th minutes.

I dont get it.

Do Britain and Ireland share their record books?

Gives it some form of context, saying Ireland on their own would not really tell you very much.

I found it weird to write it like that, in a news paper.

Almost like they do not realize we talk about 2 completely different countries.

So it could also have been the first player from Ireland and any other country in the world where nobody has reached 50 goals yet?

For the Irish, what Sir Bobby did for England is of absolute no value. Just statistics from another country.

Although all respect to Sir Bobby as the footballer in general.

it's because almost every irish international player plays in the english league i'd imagine.

Understand.

Norwegian records should include England as well.

Come to think about it, Scottish records as well.

Have a feeling it's pure ignorance, the reporter thought ireland (as Norther Ireland) is part of UK.

Well I believe it used to be, not sure why it isn't any longer.

It seems to be the fact, that Robbie Keane has played his professional career, in the English league.

International comparisons with Bobby Charlton, are a little meaningless. But statisticians just make stats.
