I am married to a Thai lady, she tells me that because I am married to a Thai and have a marriage visa I do not need a work permit. Can someone in the know please clarify for me. I have been asked to give English instruction for two hours twice a week, and I do not want to break the law. Advice from knowledgeable sources welcomed.

Being married to a Thai woman makes absolutely no difference - you still need a Work Permit.

Patrick

Any form of work, paid or unpaid, physical, mental or just giving instruction or advice requires a work permit, even volunteers need a work permit in Thailand.

You need a Work Permit.

Yep...being married gives you no more rights than any other soi-dog farang...other than the legal duty (not right) to support her :annoyed:

Thank you all, I need to show my wife this, she insists that i don't even though the law is clear from what I have seen.

I love these Thai woman who think they know everything, a friends wife had him jumping thru the hoop on a visa. Some friend had told her he needed both 400,000 in bank and 40,000 income, when I politely informed her that friend was wrong she got a bit flustered. They uaually get info from a friend of a friend who has a friend working in immigration.

As stated above you need a work permit.

Do you want your wife to save face? You could show her this English translation of the Alien Working Act 2551 and tell her that it may be a bad or incomplete translation and suggest that she should search for the original Thai text on the Internet to find the clause about a foreigner married to a Thai not needing a work permit. Unfortunately, I do not have the Thai orignal; spent half a day looking for it in vain. Difficult, if one doesn't read Thai.
