I have just been reading in another publication that the authorities are asking entertainment venues (bars) to close from Fri 15th through Mon 19th for the religious holiday.

I can't remember this happening before (5 years now)

Bars closing doesn't bother me usually but there are two points.

1. So soon after the election shutdown?

2. It's my birthday! :)

Before you start I know Thai custom is more important than my birthday, I just don't recall a four day closure before.

4 days does seem excessive, and over the week end. Although I have yet to read such a news report. Usual sources do not make any report. No doubt we will all know very soon.

probably Friday 15th only in tourist areas like Phuket

I am afraid full moon and religious holidays are not timed with alcohol banned elections. Just coinsidence its just a fortnight inbetween

The 15th is my birthday!!!!!

It was reported in the newest weekly periodical.

If this breaks any forum rules, sorry, please feel free to pull it Mods.

well this July 15th will be full moon, thus Budhist Holiday Kaophansa, and this year on your birthday. Triple celebration :D

Maybe the best thing is to:

-have a party at home

-have a party a day before or after your birthday

It is not likely they are changing the date for Asarnha Bucha Day This full-moon day of the eighth lunar month commemorates the Buddha's first sermon to his first five disciples after attaining Enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago. Evening candlelit processions are staged in all Thai Buddhist temples

I understand Asarnha Bucha day to be only one day (15 July), but like KarenBravo, I've heard that the bars will be closed on both the 15th and 16th (only). This could be just another rumour, however - in previous years, the bars have only been closed on the one day.
