Anyone following Copa America?

http://www.ca2011.com/home.php?Lang=3&Lang=2

Strangely enough, it seems like the World Cup for women has more coverage.

To quote a famous Swedish writer: Womens sport is just a tiny itty bitty more interesting than handicap sports.

Anyhow, Brazil and Argentina out, in the quarter finals.

And who will win it?

My bet goes on Uruguay.

Yes watched all the Argentina games. Very mediocre. Argentina were poor and I felt sorry for Messi being stuck with such journeymen in comparison to Barcelona. Looks very much like Uruguay now with Brazil also departed.

The entertainment has been poor in contrast to the Women's World Cup where there were several exciting games.

i've enjoyed it, though some of the football has been disappointing given the talent on display. quite difficult for a lot of them going into the tournament straight on the back of long domestic season perhaps. getting uruguay at 12-1 to win it a couple of months back is looking promising right now.

uruguay's population is just over 3 million by the way. pretty amazing what they've achieved in world football given they've about 2 million fewer people than scotland.

Given the talent at their disposal Argentina have been nothing short of appalling.

I've been thinking recently, well, up until now, they would be a decent bet for the next world cup if they had the right coach. Now i reckon even England could nick a draw against them.

easy there tiger.

if argentina had a decent manager they should be the best team in the world really - give or take a spain.

I wouldnt be surprised if Liverpool pick up either Uruguay's Center back or Left back over the next month. They are both highly rated both potentially available and I think bringing in a player who is part of Suarez's national team makes sense.

I havent watched a lot of the tournament but I think that some of the players like Neymar Aguero etc are not that brilliant that so many clubs are so excited about them.

The lack of goals in the first matches really disapointed me.

Im surpised about Argentina's performence, with the homeground and all. Almost 20 years since they won anything?

Not surprised about Brazil's, as they once again have shown us how little they really care about their own country. Their ego and bank accounts are and will always be more important.

Again and again we see the arrogant Brazilians at the world cups expecting the other teams to lay down. And then they are almost shocked when the other teams do not just hand them the victories.

Pathetic to see Argentina's and Brazil's players/staff trying to convince everyone that in spite of the result, they did a faitly good championship.

Instead of being honest and say they are disapointed with the performence.

I was most impressed about Colombia.

I have to go with StevieH here. It is highly improbable that a country the size of Uruguay would do so well. Columbia is 45m. Now although Uruguay is like 3m and is only interested in football it is statistically highly unlikely to beat Brazil or other countries. As Stevie hinted it is a bit like the chances of Scotland winning the world cup which approximate to close to zero.

So Uruguay is an anomaly however you look at it. You have to hand it to them. Bloody fuc_king cool.

I was going for Uruguay in post # 1.

:)

What impressed me most with Colombia is how they seem to have managed to come up with a new generation top notch players.

I really liked their attacking playing style.

No criticism meant. It is rather more remarkable that Brasil and Argentina that you would regard as within the top 5 teams in the world have been knocked out.

i think that's hugely inaccurate and unfair, most brasil players are incredibly proud to play for their country.

Yes as i said, with the right coach. But as far as England are concerned, i think you know that was "irony."

I absolutely agree it is remarkable those 2 teams went out that soon.

They disapointed us.

So the players are just not good enough then?

They are over rated and over payed?

Or, of course I forgot, it is the coach's fault the players do not perform.

Always the coach, never the players.

i think they largely suffer from over-hyping if anything really - so over-rated, yeah. brasil don't have the true world stars they used to have these days. kaka's fallen from grace, they don't have a top class striker and they've got blerts like robinho still in the starting XI. their best three players are probably all defenders.

I think you are being rather too polite. Its July now and thats definately the biggest load of <deleted> statement i've read on here this year.

And to be fair, there's been a few. :whistling:

I agree about the current status of their players. But, at the end of the day its all about them being ready for 2014 (even if nothing else is) and i'd judge this current crop in a couple of years. i would very much doubt that knob Robinho will be around either.

I'm going to presume that the Argentine coach will be sacked and i think they and Brazil will be the two to beat next world cup.

spain will still be up there next world cup. but i think every world cup hosted in south america has been won by a south american country?

be interesting to see how neymar and ganso develop when they move to european clubs, they're both really talented. brasil have definitely got to find a top striker though.

The climate/altitude conditions don't help the europeans.

The chances are that most of Brasils young talent will also be experienced CL players by the time of the next world cup. Neyar will probably be at Madrid and the big clubs are already looking at Ganso.

The Argentines just have everything, and with a top coach they could be magnificent.

Interesting stats also the 10 times the Finals have been played in Europe....only one time has a non-European side won it in Sweden 1958 where Brazil won it.

Brazil will always find another new superstar forward, that you can guarantee.
