Yes, its very easy to praise the likes of stickman if he backs up you own arguement.

I don't think so. After reading Stick for 8 years I think he knows about a very small segment of the red light areas. His own feelings and experience make it difficult for him to see reality. If he dropped his Bangkok baggage and got out into the rest of Thailand and 95% of the pay for play activities for a few years he might start getting a clue.

My Thai experience is based on only living in Thailand for a mere nine months and I live in the oft referred to, tourist cesspool of Patong Beach. After living for 67 years, I do know that we all need to display respect for each person's uniqueness and personal story. I also know that we need to be a lot less judgmental and a lot more respectful of others - bar girl or not. Also having lived for reasonably extended periods around the world, I believe human expectations about life are pretty much the same regardless of culture, etc. And of course, everyone's opinion is shaped by their own personal experiences. Mine just happen to have been good one's.

Once a bar girl gets over the initial shock of being with different men it becomes pretty much a 12 hour a day party.

It is very difficult to go back to a normal life after being paid as much as a country doctor for a constant party.

There in lies the rub and it is what makes Thailand women different. Even if they have never been inside of a bar they have an idea of what happens. They know the game and it is always a last ditch option. Some discover this in college when they want a new cell phone and others when they have two children needing clothes and school tuition.

It is not the same as in the West. Sure if you are beautiful and semi talented and young, a woman can get a job dancing and become the queen of denial about the sexual connotations but there is a definite sell by date. Not so in Thailand. There are 40, 50 and 60 year old women out there working in bars. Sitting at a table drinking and telling a Farang how much you dislike Thai men takes a lot less energy than planting rice.

We are all one step away from death whenever we walk along beside traffic, but few of us are careless or stupid enough to take that step.

Anyone is only one step away from prostitution; unlike being a doctor or a bus driver, there are no pre-requisites. I think Mr K was saying that that step is less unattractive in Thailand than in Manchester; less stigmatised, and an individual may be more likely to know people who have taken that step.

I am fortunate that my career as an international consultant is more lucrative than my potential earnings as a gigolo or rent boy. I suppose I should start working for my Passenger Service Vehicle license, in case that does not always remain so; I can't afford medical school fees...
