Hi,

I'm considering switching from DTAC to AIS, but I'd like to keep my mobile number.

It is possible in theory because Mobile Number Portability has been implemented last year by Thai operators, but I couldn't find much info about it.

Anyone has some experience with this?

There have been a number of first-hand reports here, each service provider has a web=page showing the steps.

Use Google translate.

You will have to pay a fee, 99 baht I think. You'll get a new SIM from AIS/One-2Call.

You may have to go to a select location.

You will lose any remaining pre-paid balance, you cannot transfer it.

You need to prove ownership of the SIM/number, so in your case make sure DTAC has your name, passport/WP details on record as the clearinghouse will verify this.

It takes 3 ~ 5 calendar days.

Yes, I did exactly that a few months ago. First you pay up any outstanding bills with DTAC (if it's postpay) then go to AIS (If you're in Pattaya you need to go to the AIS main office in Si Racha just behind Robinson) and they will take care of the rest. I think we paid 100 baht for the new sim card, that's all. Of course you need your paperwork proving it's your number. From we made the transfer request it took about 10 days for it to activate. During that time we could still use DTAC, just had to square the bill with them the month after (we were on postpay, if you're on prepay I think you just lose whatever balance you have on the sim).

I ported my number from DTAC to True this past spring. I did it at Fortune Tower in Bangok where DTAC is on the floor above True.

Some advice I had followed when I did it: Make sure DTAC has your current passport info (and maybe address info, too?). When you complete the MNP form at AIS, they will ask your passport info. When they contact DTAC to start the process, apparently they will verify your passport info, and if they don't match, there can be confusion and/or delay.

Thanks a lot!

That's more clear now.

I found the MNP page on DTAC website before, but all the text is set as a picture/flash so google translate wasn't of much help.

I'll try that and report the results here.

Been trying to switch from AIS to True but couldn't because True said that I had an outstanding from 2005, I knew that was impossible because I wasn't even in Thailand in 2005!! Was told that I need to go file a police report and bring it back to them and True would contact me in 1 month. About 2 months went by and no one contacted me so I go back to the store to follow up and was told that the matter was cleared and I could start the process.

I gave them all of my information and Thai ID I used with AIS, 4 days later I get a call from True saying that they couldn't port my number because my ID did not match with True. Apparently the sales lady decided to use my mobile number instead of my ID so I gave them my ID again. The next day I get an SMS saying they could not port again because of a code 03 and to go to the store to get more information. I went to the store and they again they said that my ID did not match with AIS. I told them I already gave the correct info and True is the one that messed up not AIS or me! Of course they didn't care and just smiled and said it will be another 3-5 days.

So today after 3 months True calls me again and says that I have still have an outstanding balance, and I need to bring them another copy of the police report!!!!! I told me them that they (True) messed up the whole process not me or AIS, I did everything they asked and had to follow up on the process myself. I'm at the point where I don't even want to switch as it more of a hassle than anything else.

I might work with AIS on two specific issues:

1.) Registering your full name and passport with the phone number. You may have to get the approval of the Thai ID holder, I'm assuming this is not you? Make sure AIS understand your intention to port the number, and that you need documentation from them showing that they acknowledge you are the registered owner of that SIM/number.

2.) Clarify any outstanding account issues with AIS. Obtain documentation from them showing a zero balance.

I might work with one of the larger AIS service centers where English is spoken. Or possibly via 1175.

The Clearinghouse, an independent group funded by the mobile service providers, seem to be denying your number the ability to transfer. They are looking at details/information provided by AIS. You need to get AIS to 'clean up' their records.

The Giver, AIS, will use any trick in the book to reject a transfer for obvious reasons. on letter wrong or digit, and its a legal reason to reject the porting. Thats how banal it is.

The recipient (who ever it is ), is glad to accept you, its the donor which will do the utmost to block it

Actually have AIS and I'm trying to switch to True H.

1.) The number with AIS is registered under my name using my Thai ID, sorry if I didn't make it clear.

2.) The outstanding balance is with True not AIS. AIS actually called me to try to persuade me to stay with them, but said that if i wanted to move to True I can do so as I do not have any outstanding balance with them.

Somehow my information was used to open a True account and it show there was an outstanding balance, but according to the shop the issue as resolved.

I have cleared everything on my end with AIS and they confirmed that I am free to switch as I have no outstanding balance.

Bottom line is that somewhere along the line True messed up.

I transferred by (pre-paid) number from AIS/One-2-Call to DTAC ~ 2 months ago. The process quick, easy, effortless and DTAC service was up within 30 hours, even though they said it would take ~ 5 days. I was actually quite surprised how easy it was. I know ~ 7 other instances of porting and only one encountered a minor issue; not currently registered so they had to wait 3 days before beginning the transfer process.

There was a time when everyone had to register their SIM, I know I did, maybe from circa 2006 when there was some concern about using mobiles to detonate bombs? So maybe that is why some transfers work out better than others?

Hmmm, arkom, it is strange that Truemove H is making it difficult for you to become their customer? Not a particularly good sign?

When I went to True shop to follow up on the issue, they told that it was resolved and I could start the process and was told it would take at least 7 days for transfer my number. Two days later AIS contacted me saying they got paperwork from True about porting my number. They told me that for some reason True used my mobile number instead of my ID number and because it didn't match there would be problems, but other than that everything was good to go as far as AIS is concerned.

So again I called True to give them the correct information and they said to wait for SMS. Next day I get the SMS from True and thought that was fast, but it said that MNP could not be done because information from AIS and True did not match. The problem was of course the ID again so I gave it to True for the third time!! By this time I got a bill from AIS so I cleared that day so there wouldn't be an issue. The following day another SMS but now it says I have to clear my balance with AIS, so I called True to tell them I already paid it and now they said to wait another 7 days.

So after a total of 2 months from the beginning to today I get a call from True saying I can't switch, because apparently the True shop was misinformed and the issue I had with True is still on going and they wanted to start the process of getting another police report ect.. again!

You would think that but AIS is not the problem, the recipient (True) is the one that is not accepting me.
