Army Chief Denies Thaksin's Involvement in Reshuffle

The army chief denies a rumor that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is involved with the annual military reshuffle, insisting that all promotions and transfers are based on merit, not politics.

Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has asked the public to have confidence in the armed forces' decision regarding the annual military reshuffle, insisting that all promotions and transfers are based on ability, knowledge and experience and are without political interference.

Prayuth has also dismissed the military reshuffle list that was recently reported in the press, calling it unfounded.

He criticized the source as unreliable.

In addition, the army chief urged the public not to heed a rumor that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is involved in the armed forces' decision making process.

Prayuth also clarified reports that he has nominated General Sakon Sajjanit, head of the Secretariat Department, to be the next permanent-secretary of the Defense Ministry, pointing out that according to protocol, the ideal candidate for the post should be a deputy.

The army chief said that he only has jurisdiction over army affairs including maintaining force readiness and making decision regarding the armed forces.

At the same time, he pleaded with all parties not to link the military with politics.

The army reported on the overall situation in the restive South, and indicated that the conflict in the region stemmed from long-standing animosities and that the army has been doing everything it can to suppress the ongoing violence.

However, Prayuth has admitted that the army has not been very effective because the insurgent groups are unpredictable in their attacks against innocent civilians.

He insisted that the army is doing its best to address this sensitive issue.

At the same time, the army chief believes that the government should consider harsher punishments for people who have violated the law and perhaps impose a stricter curfew in the region.

Prayuth is also aiming to rotate the deployed forces from these areas to give them rest.

Deputy PM Reneges on Bringing Thaksin Home

A deputy prime minister says his speech during the Pheu Thai Party's campaign trail to bring former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra home in six months is merely a campaign tactic.

Deputy Prime Minister Police Captain Chalerm Yoobamrung said his speech during the Pheu Thai Party's campaign trail to bring ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra home in six months after the party is in power is just a campaign tactic as he does not believed that Thaksin would return to the country in the near future.

As for criticism by the Opposition that he played a bigger role than Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and shielded her from tough questions during the declaration of the government's policies to Parliament, Chalerm said he believed his role will not affect the premier's leadership.

He claimed that the premier is in charge of the overall policy direction while Cabinet members would be responsible for queries on their respective responsibilities and she did well yesterday.

Chalerm noted that in the past, there was a former prime minister who delegated the tasks to ministers instead of personally answering queries and he was prime minister for over eight years.

When asked if the person he mentioned is Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda, the deputy premier said he preferred not to name the person.

Tribute to a Princess

The Siam Sinofonietta invites the public to their concert dedicated to the memory of Her Royal Highness Princess Petcharat on Thursday, August 25 at 7.30pm at the Thailand Cultural Centre's Small Hall.

For "Klassikal Kidz - Memory of a Princess", the Sinfonietta will be conducted by Somtow Sucharitkul and joined by the young, internationally known conductor Trisdee na Patalung. The programme includes "Phra Nornad", "Pavane pour une infante defunte", "Wai Sa Pha Mae Malia" (Ave Maria in Northern Thai dialect), "Blumine", (the "lost movement" from Mahler's Symphony No 1) and Beethoven's Symphony No 5

The Sinfonietta will also play Trisdee na Patalung's moving setting of a lullaby with words by HM King Rama VI who passed away having known his daughter for only a single day.

The death of Princess Petcharat, another descendant of Thao Sucharit Damrong, has severed an important link to the creative universe of the Rama VI court. With the 100th anniversary of King Rama VI's accession approaching, nostalgia for those times is surfacing. The Sinfonietta pays tribute to a wonderful and much-loved princess who has played an important role in keeping modern people connected with that illustrious era.

The Siam Sinfonietta, a full symphony orchestra consisting of young people 12 and up, is one year old and has astonished the local music community by consistently performing classical music to a professional standard.

Admission is by donation in any amount. Th recommended donation is Bt500. Seats can be obtained at the door or by calling (02) 231 5273.
