Killer Of NZ Croquet Chief Nabbed

The brother-in-law of Charles Jones says there is no way the World Croquet Federation president could have attacked his killer as he had injured his shoulder and couldn’t even lift his arm above his waist.

Though I don't doubt that the Syrian murdered this guy I seem to have missed the post where it was stated that the victim only had one arm???

Well, maybe its unfair and rude, but it looks to me that this Syrian is guilty as sin, and I am concerned that he is going to get more sympathy than he deserves as he is clearly a charmer (con man?), young, masculine, very handsome, can at least say he is straight, and has a sympathetic political refugee sob story (imagine violins playing now), etc. So he is well set up to present a picture that the pervy old homo man morally deserved what he got. I mean even the cop in the video is cuddling with him. What's up with that? The murder victim and his family deserve justice from the system here.

Absolutely agree.

Another point is, that the Syrian could be bi-sexual and of course there are some people that are desperate and will do anything for money.

Who gives a rat’s behind what the victim was into providing he’s not harming anyone else.

An innocent man has been brutally murdered and that’s all we need to know.

A former Syrian Army commando has been arrested in connection with the murder of Charles Edmund Jones, late President of the World Croquet Federation, in Jones's rented condominium in Chon Buri's Jomtien area on Monday night.

The New Zealander's body was discovered in the condominium with multiple stab wounds on Tuesday.

Provincial Police Region 2 chief Lt-General Thangai Prasajaksatru presented the suspect, 21-year-old Mohamad Shanar Ryad, at a press conference along with the victim's notebook, cell phones and wristwatch, which were reportedly stolen, as well as a pocket knife they alleged was the murder weapon.

Sports boss murder suspect to go on trial in Thailand

The man alleged to have murdered Westport man Charles Jones will go to trial on September 18. Mr Jones was murdered while on holiday in Thailand just over a year ago. The 56-year-old was the New Zealand President of the World Croquet Federation and was on his way home from a world croquet tournament in London when he was stabbed to death in his hotel room in the Thai beach resort of Pattaya.

Brother-in-law Robert McMillan said the family was still discussing the possibility of one of them travelling to Thailand for the trial. He expected they would be kept up to date by phone by the New Zealand Embassy which had been looking after them very well.

Mr McMillan understood Mr Jones' alleged murderer was an ex-Syrian commando who was not supposed to be in Thailand at the time.

UPDATE:

Court for alleged killer of Kiwi in Thailand

By Kim Fulton of the Westport News

The alleged killer of Westport man Charles Jones was due to reappear in court in Thailand today.

Mr Jones, 56, was stabbed to death in his hotel room at the Thai beach resort of Pattaya while on holiday in August 2011.

Former Syrian army commando and United Nations-registered refugee Mohamad Shanar Ryad was charged with his murder.

Mr Jones' sister Alison McMillan said she hadn't yet heard anything about today's trial but confirmed today was the date Ryad was due to reappear.

She thought the police would be giving evidence today but said it was hard to know anything without being in court - "you've just got to be patient".

She went to Thailand in November last year with Mr Jones' friend Stuart Yeatman to attend Ryad's trial, which had been postponed several times. She was glad she'd made the trip as it provided some closure.

She said she would be talking to Mr Yeatman later today to find out if he'd heard anything about today's trial or when a verdict might be announced.

Mr Jones, who was the New Zealand president of [more...]

The time-line in this story is a little confusing.

21 year-old...............here for 4 years.............refugee status, how long was his period of persecution? 1 year?...............Syrian Army commando (2 years training??).

21.............17............16..............14???? The Syrian Army trains 14 year-olds as commandos?? I smell pork pies.

yep it sounds a joke... just before Assad senior died I was working in Syria for a major oil co.... Syria boasted at having millions in uniform which was true ...most of the young kids wore military uniforms...that was in 2000

UPDATE

Verdict over murder of Kiwi in Thailand expected in March

By Kim Fulton of the Westport News

The verdict in trial of an ex-Syrian commando accused of killing Westport man Charles Jones in Thailand may be known on March 14.

The court case began in November after several postponements. It resumed last week after an adjournment and is due to wrap up in March.

Mr Jones' sister Alison McMillan said she understood the March date was for a verdict and possibly sentencing.

"I think this may be the one we're waiting for.''

Ms McMillan travelled to Thailand in November to attend the trial, along with Mr Jones' friend Stuart Yeatman.

A woman whose apartment Mr Jones had stayed in would attend court on March 14, Ms McMillan said. She had been providing information to his family and friends in New Zealand throughout the case.

Mr Jones, 56, was stabbed to death in his hotel room at the Thai beach resort of Pattaya while on holiday in August 2011.

Another example that the Thai police can quickly locate and arrest a suspect when they want to -- and the corollary illustration that those who are not found are protected, or the implications are too great a loss of someone's face.

Erm. Thailand's 16th most wanted committed several murders before being apprehended. A bit late in the day don't you think? And what about the 15 who are 'wanted' even more urgently? I'm thinking that RTP couldn't catch a Thai train. Living and sponging off a Thai GF? What are the chances that she turned him in?
