I luckily don't have any food allergies, but I have friends at home in Sydney who cant eat peanuts, seafood etc.

I know a lot of Thai's and farangs here and was just thinking all the Thai's I know don't have any food allergies that I know of.

A common one with my Farang friends here is the peanut allergy, probably the worst to have since its great in food and its in a lot of it here.

Anyways, this was just in my head today and not really important, I just was thinking about it, that's all.

Milk

Wiki says 98 percent of Thais are lactose intolerant. However, that is a completely different thing than being ALLERGIC to milk. Much rarer.

Why am i not surprised. You got me on follow don't you JT

While they are lactose intolerant, it sure doesnt stop them consuming milk based products.

I knew a Thai once, who was allergic to hard work. :whistling:

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?

Just because you have 2x the number of posts, doesn't make me any less bright.

Back to allergies - plenty of Thais are allergic to walking - it appears.

Perhaps that is why many children at my local primary school do not consume the free milk given to them every day. Suits me, my daughter brings the unwanted milk home for my personal consumption of cooking.

Lactose intolerance is standard. Because there was never any dairy industry ,here in Thailand ,until fairly recently. So, NO milk was consumed after breast feeding ceased.I know of no other allergies that Thais have. I do live in the scrub, but did spend 12 years living in Bkk., . Certainly here ,I know of no-one( Thai) who has any allergies,What is interesting, when I went to school , in OZ, in the 40's and the '50's NOT one pupil had an allergy .To ANYTHING. Now ,it appears 10 % of Aussies ,have allergies. Why?In such a short time. There is a 2 year waiting list to be allergy tested. That is how bad it is. Also ,when I was a kid, obesity was unknown. We had a couple of fat kids, but no obesity. Today over 30% of Ozzies are classified , not as fat , but as obese .We are experiencing frightening growth in both diabetes type 2 and heart attack. Sufficient for warnings to be coming about - Can the health system cope financially, or will it break the healthcare system? Financially.

Yes, many Thais are Lactose intolerant. Drinking milk and sometimes eating cheese and ice cream with heavy amounts of milk in it leaves them feeling bloated. It's genetic, and more prevalent in Asia than it is anywhere else in the world. I mentioned this a month or so back in the "Why don't Thais drink (fresh) milk?" topic.

Some Japanese that drink beer (but not all of them) will get a very bright red skin color after a couple of beers. I had a Japanese-American friend who would do that when he drank...but only beer, not hard alchohol drinks.

But back to Thailand. My Thai wife's oldest son has a severe shellfish (shrimp and crab included) reaction. He breaks out in a rash, sweats, vomits, and feels very weak within a few minutes of eating any kind of shellfish. So no shrimp fried rice for him. Once we were at a retaurant and some other family members ordered shrimp. Apparently after that the restaurant fried his chicken fried rice in the same Wok.

We had to rush him to a hospital for shots to counteract the effects of the fried shrimp left in that Wok.

But the restaurant never did charge us for any of the food the whole family ate.

My Thai friend is allergic to shellfish. Eating shrimp or crab will result in a sever reaction which would put her in the hospital.

Interesting. Have to wonder if this allergic reaction applies only to seafood.....

As a greater percentage of Thais will take [regularly] fresh water counterparts.

Aside, I know none that retain any such food allergies and sensitivities of the sort.

98 percent of Thais are lactose intolerant? Where on earth did you get that information from?

Is it possible that you add a reference to the wiki page in question?

I am not suggesting that you are wrong, but if the wiki page state what you claim, then the wiki page is wrong.

There are plenty of research in this area and lactose intolerance amongst Thais is nowhere near 98%.

the first word in his post is Wiki. that may be a clue as to the origin of the information.

That may be the reason why I asked him for a reference to the wiki page in question.

Without having sen the page in question I presume the figure refers to the percentage of Thai adults with symptoms of lactose intolerance, which from a medical perspective is something completely different from being diagnosed lactose intolerant. The most common number amongst researchers is hovering around the 50% mark for the percentage of lactose intolerance amongst Thais (which is an extremely high number).

I think thais are allergic to somtum.

The way they bitch and moan about upset gut after eating it everyday leads me to this conclusion. Wrong I know, but helps me get over their bitching and moaning about it.

I almost 40 I have not seen any Thai person allergic to peanuts or gluten like people in the west. Although many Thai are allergic to seafood. Lactose intolerance is not allergic reaction and will soon past if drink more milk body will adjust.
