3 In 1 Laser Printer - Monochrome

I am looking for a good quality, and reasonably priced laser printer/scanner etc.

Colour scanning is important, but colour printing is not.

A LAN or wireless connection would be a bonus, but I can live with USB if I must.

I am not interested in discussions of the pros and cons of laser versus inkjet,

so please don't waste your time and mine on that subject.

Thanks

I'm looking to get the same thing at some point. I saw a Brother model in Powerbuy the other day at 4500Baht. That is probably the one I will go for as I do very little printing; just the odd bank letter, or immigration photocopy.

That model didnt have network/wifi.

There were also two HPs; one with and one without wifi. I'm not keen on HP as the drivers are often incredibly clunky.

If you do a lot of printing then you should study the total cost per print for the relevant machines. This can vary greatly between brands and models, and should take into account any requirement for changing expensive imaging drums every now and again (some brands include the drum in the toner cart). If, like me, you hardly print anything then the purchase cost is going to be the most important feature.

Also have a look at Samsung and Fuji Xerox. I thinkit worth getting the scanning also but you will pay more for the 3in 1 types. I used Brother and HP in business use in executives offices, the HPseem to last longer than the Brother. You normally pay a fair bit more for networkingbut the way Wi-Fi is on low end stuff these days you may find something. If you’rein Bangkok have walk around Pantip IT Plaza or Fortune IT Mall to see what fitsyou requirement then go looking for the best price. Non of this low end stuff will last if you really use it a lot for may copies if you going to be doing a lot printing go up in price to the next band.

Thanks for those comments.

My local shop has the Brother DCP 7055,

but the reviews say the grey scale printing is mediocre

and like Darrel I need decent copies for immigration purposes.

I will keep looking and report back when I find a suitable unit.

First of all, this type of Laser Printer/copier/scanner/fax unit is known in the industry as Multifunction and/or All In One, so use those terms in your search for products.

I'm going to put a plug in here for Canon. After using various models from HP and Samsung for 15 or so years, I've been happiest with the two Canons I've owned over the last 4 years.

While checking out toner refills years ago, I was looking through the charts and came to realize that many of the HP laser printers had the actual laser engines manufactured by Canon. I always thought of HP as a leading manufacturer of laser printers; I didn't realize they were actually more of an assembler of outsourced components. I also gained a greater respect for Canon at this time; admittedly a brand I hadn't really thought much about when thinking Laser Printers.

One of the biggest problem areas I've experienced in Laser Printers over the years has been with paper handling: moving the paper though the printer consistently and without jamming. Mostly it seemed to be with consistency in positioning text in the exact same location on each sheet, (due to imprecise paper movement through the printer.) This was especially true when doing labels, envelopes, etc. My next printer purchases were from Canon, and they were much better about this. I bought a Canon MF 4250 (back in the USA) and currently use a Canon MF 4350 here in Thailand. They also do good 2-sided (duplex) printing to save paper.

Look into the MF4570dn and MF4580dn models for network-ready use.

I am not convinced that Immigration cares at all about the print quality. Some of the 5B photocopies I have taken in have been barely legible. I think they just like to have a sheaf of paper presented to them, regardless of what's on it. My banks are pretty much the same.

For me the 4500B Brother would do the trick. Not sure of the model number but I will check next time I go to Central.

Sorry I forgot Canon yes they are in the same classand I think better than Brother, not sure if Canon still make the Laser engines for many manufactures certainly was the case 10-15 years ago, maybe it still is case. But the engines only one componentof a good printer.

On the Brothers I just found the moving parts and mechanicalson them less robust than other printersin the same class.

People like Brother because toner on most models can be replaced separately from the drum; but the Brother' build quality is not so good. I would recommend Fuji Xerox or Samsung. HP is a disaster on a software side.

I am now looking at several options from Canon, Samsung and Oki

but still no clear decision.

OKI B2540 MFPP, Canon MF 4570DN, 4690DN and Samsung SCX 4623FW on the short list.

The lower priced options usually seem to have several negative reviews........

so my price level is rising. :bah:

I have an OKI MFP 2520 it is without doubt the worst product I have ever bought taking months to repair (actually replace) a faulty drum that failed after printing only a few pages and then more lengthy delays to replace the replacement drum that was printing speckled copies out of the box, of course they wanted to charge me for the replacement drum as it was not an OEM half full one, but whose fault is that, all this took place at the Rayong OKI Distributor whose local service department was handling the debacle, all of course delivered with a charming smile !

I finally settled on the Samsung SCX 4623FN a well reviewed unit.

Simple and easy to use for printing and scanning, my two main requirements.

The N means it is network enabled so can be plugged directly into the router, and not take up a usb slot.

That way I can access it from anywhere that I happen to be in the house, and is easier for visitors to access.

I would stay away from the Fuji Xerox brand

Loved it, but it started to paper jam all the time and when I took to be repaired at a main repair facility in Chonburi, they wanted more to repair it than I paid for it initially, so I just went with a new Brother for less than the repair

I've been looking at that one also. Pretty similar to the Brother I mentioned.

How much was yours, and where from?

Sorry I cannot help you there as I am not in LOS,

unless you want to fly over to the Middle East?

No, I thought not. :D

$350, but then prices do tend to be high here for electronics.
