"I just got quoted 150 baht for Kra Pao Gai on Sukhumvit around soi 11, <deleted>? this is a first for me, not just one, but 3 vendors quoted the same price... I usually pay 50 baht even at 5am in the morning, <deleted> are these idiotic thais thinking? has anyone else come across this recently"

You didn't say if you paid the Bt150. Shame on you if you did.

No way, after the 3rd one said 150, I jumped in a cab and went home, and no I'm not on holiday here either..

i believe i asked you where, i want to see for myself

I already said it in my original post, around soi 11 (as a guide to where abouts on Sukhumvit road), not actually on soi 11.....just walk around there and ask a couple of vendors, this was at 5am, I dunno if that had anything to do with it, they probably assume everyone is that drunk by this point time that they don't care or realize how much they're paying for food...

why do you even pay 50 Baht ? 25 to 30 near me. Just go 7-11 they have it for 29 Baht

30 baht are you crazy? There is a small town without electricity in Mae Sot where they charge 10 baht.

i still get mine for 1 baht but cant afford that soon as im running out of gold

I just looked at the by-line for this topic heading which was "Are these Thai's stupid?".

I'm not sure if that is the case, but I believe the farang's who pay that price certainly are stupid.

I would say only those who should know better. Expats and the likes. But tourist they don't know any better and are getting ripped off.

Suk soi 11/13 area at 5 in the morning, its not exactly the hub of quality tourists we keep hearing about.

Cant post the link, but google, Bangkoks sleazy street of shame for an insight, would you want to live in an area like that?

It is called the free market. Let every vendor charge what they want and let the free market figure it out. If charging 50 baht is so much smarter than the vendor who charges 50 baht will surely put all the other vendors out of business. See, the free market solves everything. Hmm, seems like a good business for a mia farang.

Free market doesn't apply to tourists and food vendors.

No tourist will waste an hour going from vendor to vendor trying to find out the best deal on rice with chicken.

Local people and expats might do so, if they eat in the area regularly.

And my way around these small time scammers who are so common in bkk, is to eat in established places: food courts, KFC, etc etc.

that would be more work,

"Work" ? ohhhh don't say that word in Thailand, they already made it illegal for foreigners and i heard some rumours that there are some revolutionary plans to expand the illegality of it to the indigenous population as well, which however are already doing their best to stop this unusual practice :D

More and more people are doing some sort of researches before traveling (internet, word of mouth, printed materials, etc), especially those on a budget, and these kind of information are certainly of high interest to them as it will increase their buying power even x10, we have to share our knowledge.

Idiotic, no I don't think so…. bloody annoying, yes! For whatever the reason you are given for being charged the 'farang' price, it's a form of 'rip-off' nothing new, those street vendors are in good company; Taxi drivers, bar owners, petrol pump attendance, the list goes on, however this form of rip-off is not confined to Thailand.

I see it like this; If you pay 150 Bt instead of 25 Bt for a meal from a street vendor as a tourist, count yourself lucky if that all you get ripped off while on your holiday here………If you live in Thailand and are paying this, then more fool you and no they don't respect you for paying this.

How can taxi driver and petrol pump attendant can cheat you ? The price is displayed on the counter and same for everybody .

Bar owners ? The place where I go, the prices are either written on the wall or on the menu, no cheating either.

You just need to avoid the tourist traps. Not long ago, I went to visit a friend who stay in the same guest house for the past 15 years, Federal Hotel if I remember wel. For the price he pays for his lousy room, I can stay in a 5 stars hotel, breakfast buffet included. I say some people deserve to be cheated.

Taxi drivers can cheat you in soo many different ways, from using a rigged meter to just pretending for whatever reason to take a much longer way and so on, while some petrol station attendant do not reset the price on the pumps so you pay much more or they just give you the wrong change if they gave it to you at all...

Bar owners, we could write a book about the miriads of cheats.......are you being honest with your questions? I find it hard to believe you are not yet aware of all the so many cheats taking place here, not just in "tourist trap" locations as you wrote, you could go in the middle of the jungle and still find people that try to cheat you for whatever reasons....

This two-tier price system only applies to ferrang who moan about Thailand on forums...

What's a "ferrang"?

Frankly I've never heard of this happening at a street stall even slap bang in the heart of touristville.

Personally I lean with the sentiment here that the vendors are either chancing their arms with the returning all-night revellers or maybe it's just that prices "after hours" along Sukhumwit tend to be high.

I recently had a late night beer at one of the makeshift bars which spring up along Sukhumwit late at night and was a wee bit surprised to be charged 100B for the pleasure of drinking a lukewarm beer at a wonky table surrounded by iffy hookers - more than I'd paid all night in far more pleasant surroundings.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "rent" for a late night/all night pitch for a food stall is quite high so they whack prices up for grub in the wee small hours as well.

That said it's still only 30B for the excellent Khao Man Gai outside the 7-11 at the mouth of Soi 11 (or was last year at any rate)

Some confusion with the name of your friend's guest house. The Federal Hotel on Soi 11 is not a guest house but rather a 90 hotel with restaurant, pool, Wi-fi, etc. Rooms are 1300-1500 baht per night with breakfast, so hardly in the 5 star class price wise.

I was cleaning my bookmarks when I found this old threat. I guess I was plannin to reply you but I needed to check my information.

So I confirm it's this hotel, it was highly recommended by a friend for its pool. But it was something like 15 years ago, I remember it was my first trip to Thailand with my girlfriend. The day after my arrival, she came to pick me up at the hotel with a friend of her and from their faces I could see they were far from impressed by the place. She booked me in a much nicer hotel for the same price. Here something that will go the way of the "thais bashers". At the desk, when I checked in, the reception wanted to charge me double that what was agreed because, they didn't hide it, I was a foreigner. Then my gf used a trick that we used again a couple of other times later. She argued that I was a customer of her company, she was the one paying, so she was entitled to the Thai price. It worked smile.gif

Later I used to stay in the Mercure soi 22, very nice place, great location. I was really sorry when it closed

I have to admit, at the beginning my opinion of Thailand was not the best. My gf and I, we met abroad. At the beginning when we were travelling together in Thailand, there was some very embarrassing moments, when people try to overcharge us, when there were regards, people wondering if my gf was some kind of escort or prostitute.

But little by little we found our way around these problems. So when people say "I know Thais are not honest, because I'm living in Thailand for 5, 10, even 15 or 20 years" I want to reply, are you that stupid ? (and one more posting right suspension ! biggrin.gif), you've been here for so long and you don't know you way around ? I know how much it cost to fill my tank, how much the taxi from the airport to my home costs, and when I go for buffet at the Landmark, I never forget to check they still have this two for one promotion.

As I said before, some people deserve to be cheated, stupidity should be a capital offense.

You do realise that of that 150 Baht, over half of it is going to a "dark influence".

Do you know that when the bogeyman goes to sleep, he checks under his bed if Abhisit is hiding there ?

And that since he is a kid, Abhisit always keeps the light on when going to sleep ? It's not because Abhisit is afraid of the dark, it's because the dark is afraid of Abhisit.
