Is it me or do Thais panic easy. We, the village have been told that we may have to evacuate. The reasons seems to be all over the place, mudslides, sink holes etc. Now we are in the middle of floods and the bridges out, are out. When I ask where are we supposed to evacuate to, they have no answer. Anyway they set up warning sirens to warn everyone of what I don't know. Next thing someone comes and says the sirens have gone off in a village about 5 km away. FIL and BIL work for the Government and within minutes are in their uniforms and gone. Phones are working, but no one bothers to phone to see what's happening.

The district Governor is round and his story is that there is a fault line along here and we are going to have earthquakes. Everyone is packing to leave, wife is getting the kids ready in a panic [seen that movie 2012 ] They have no idea where they want to go,but everyone wants to go.

Strange enough the rains have finally stopped and it is a beautiful night and I am going now where. Everyone else seems to be getting ready to leave. The wife says the soldiers will come and get everyone out who can't get out now. I said how is the army going to get here when there is no bridge. I have given up and sat down to play on the computer and leave them to it. Jim

Probably for the best Jim.

Why am I reminded of Kipling, how did it go, when you can keep your head when all around you etc etc.

Hope wifey was good enough to knock you up a tray of sannies and throw a 6 pick in the fridge before departing.

Well I am still here and the world has not come crashing down. It's a pitty that it's not day light and I could video the comings and goings.

FIL, who has the best uniform in the village has come back from a short meeting with whoever. He has asked if I can check on the inter net to see what's happening, which I do and there appears to be no warnings, nor are there any on the Ubon Tv chanal. The local radio stations, we only receive 2 stations here, are broadcasting warnings. The villagers are waiting for the father in law to tell them whether to go or stay. The FIL is waiting for the local Governor to make a call. The Governor is waiting for some one higher up to tell him what to do and is listening to the local radio station for up dates. A lot of the villagers have moved their new cars to places they think will be safe.

Now things have settled a bit and the wife in not in full panic mode, I start to get some answers. The story seems to be this, everyone has been warned at sometime that there is a small rift, I think that's what it's called, running through the area. A warning by the forestry Dept was issued about landslides. The local radio then began to broadcast a warning, but it turned from landslides in the mountains into sink holes and earthquakes. The local Governor hearing the radio warnings sets up the sirens in the 3 villages to warn people to evacuate, the radio station then starts to broadcast that sirens have been set up by the government and when they go off get out. As in any Thai village rumors spread fast and the army is on it's way etc.

FIL is back, kids are going to bed and the village is turning in for the night. Reminds me of Orson Welles broadcast of war of the worlds.

Just goes to show zzaa [ think you are from the US ] Thai are very American at heart.

The whole thing is over as fast as it began. Jim

How successful was the governor's earth quack prediction?

Do you live near any known Thailand fault lines?

..Thailand's full of faults..but hey what the heck!

Another broad sweeping generality on the savages as a whole??

zzaa, I'm generally on board with most of your posts and comments but at the same time, the OP is probably one of the most fair and balanced farang poster on the forum. I don't for a single minute believe that he would have ever thought of the locals as being savages (not in any of the posts that I have read of his at any rate).

As opposed to the many other countries that have their media whip them up into panic stricken frenzies over perceived threats?

My missus was in our car when a wild elephant appeared around the corner and came our way....panic is an understatement and she said she wanted to get out of the car and run........I wound the window down and stuck the camera out while reversing somewhat quick.

Tell me/everyone-why do you have such a downer on anything you respond to.

Have never read a more miserable sod on any forum ?? Is it done deliberatly ??

But of course!

It's all calculated to P*ss everyone off,it's the same cynical, downbeat, wind up cr*p, on every thread zzaa09 visits,

if he's not the permanently in residence TV Troll? then he sure is doing an award winning, impression of one!

I'm not sure about the above as zzaa09's post are well constructed and eloquent and I sincerely believe he has been locked up in his village with precious few means of exit. Perhaps his profile should read "unwillingly misanthropic" as he is doing his utmost to socialise under the circumstances.

There was a similar poster on an Udon forum named Texpat .... makes me wonder if they're on and the same.
