Windows Xp

Does anybody know where I can get a legal copy of Windows XP?

Or Can it be downloaded cheaply?

All the computer malls I've been to just have windows 7...can it really have become extinct so quickly?

It is not for sale any longer replaced by Vista and then Win 7, not so quickly it was released in 2001 . 5 year is a life time in IT terms 10 years is 2 life times.

XP is really an old operating system...

Note that one of the impressive features of Windows7 is that it actually requires less powerful machines than the previous Vista. Most of machines who could run XP can also run Win7...

And it seems the upcoming Windows8 is even better at that: some people announced they managed to have it running on a 128MB RAM machine (!!!)

I just installed an old unopened legal copy of XP onto my gf's laptop that was running vista. Big improvement altho MS no longer supports it - can't upgrade to Explorer 9 etc.

Eventually will switch to Windows 7 no doubt

Of course they still support it, at least until 2014. It is just not compatible with IE9.

They will support XP if it has SP3 installed.

End of support

End of support refers to the date when Microsoft no longer provides automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. This is the time to make sure you have the latest available service pack installed. Without Microsoft support, you will no longer receive security updates that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software that can steal your personal information. For more information go to Microsoft Support Lifecycle.

Desktop operating system: Windows XP

Latest service pack: Service Pack 3

End of mainstream support: April 14, 2009

End of extended support: April 8, 2014

Presently Windows XP without SP3 is not supported.

If you do a Windows update, previous versions of XP will upgrade to SP3.
