Short Term Internet Option For Torrent User

I'll be in Bangkok for 2 months this November staying in Suk Soi 29.

Having lived in this part of the world for some years now I've formed quite a healthy addiction to all things torrent.

I've spent the last few days scouring this forum trying to dissect all the info I've found on internet options in Bangkok.

I know it's been discussed at length by many but was hoping another torrent enthusiast could give me some info on what would work best for me.

What I need:

  • an unlimited service
  • a download speed from international sites of 2.5mbps or over (4-8 would be better). (not fussed about up speeds as am using seedbox)
  • not to have to wait 5 days or so when I get there to have this set up.

I don't mind paying for 6 months even though I'll only be there for 2 but dont want to pay for a year.

I've contacted the apartments I'm staying at to see if they can help but no response as yet. (they have a fixed 6mbps connection but between 150 apartments so obviously that won't do)

I have also looked into the option of getting a virtual office but I am waiting to hear back about the speeds that can be offered. I'd then leave a laptop there and then connect to it remotely from where I am staying.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if it applies but could be worth investigating. Here in Pattaya the girlfriends boss has just got wi-fi on a monthly basis from Family Mart shop. She uses it in her laundry and I gather it is on all day.

I do not know the terms and conditions attached to this and the boss has limited knowledge in this area and limited English too. Maybe some research or maybe someone knows the rules, speed etc of Family Mart wi-fi. Is it even available in the area of BKK that you are going to.

You're using a seedbox. Why then do you need such a high local Internet speed?

For your local Internet connection, why not use your 'phone? I understand that 3G is available now in Bangkok. And if that fails, use GPRS/EDGE, which is perfectly adequate for downloading a few hours of entertainment each day. Virtually zero set-up time, unlimited data plans available, no long term commitment.

...because I want to download from my server (seedbox) to my PC in Bangkok.

Sticking with the mobile 'phone option, Both True and TOT offer UTMS/HSDPA 3.5G services in central Bangkok, with respective maximum speeds of 7.2 and 14.4 Mbit/sec. The True service is currently free.

This isn't really a Bit-Torrent issue but rather an FTP issue. I think the only option for the OP's application (international -->Thailand: FTP) would be a fixed-line (DSL/DOCSIS) connection. This may be hard to come by? Maybe look for a rental/sublet which includes DSL?

3G is not really an option as most plans have 3 GB ~ 5 GB caps. I suspect the OP is looking at 100+ GB down over 30 days? Even a local seedbox wouldn't help without the fixed-line BB solution.

You can buy prepaid TOT 3G unlimited download sims for around 899BHT that last 30 days. not sure if there still around. I cannot think of another option that you going to have for such short period of time 2 Months. Unless as the other OP says you live where there is already an ADSL service installed.

These TOT 3G plans max out at 6 GB and capped at 2 Mbps.

Yes, am using FTP to download files from the seedbox.

Correct, around that amount.

Maybe I can look into the virtual office option.

Anybody got an experience with this?

Hi,

I am in a very similar position. Just another farang, here temporarily (4 months) and in need of some decent internets!!! I am staying in a serviced apartment.

What I did was to take a punt and hook up with Buddy Broadband ADSL 8Mbps/512kbps connection with unlimited download / upload for 660 THB / month. Minimum contract is 6 months. If you pay the 6 months in advance there are no early exit penalties. This company provides the ADSL router and you don't even have to pay an equipment deposit. At the end of your 2 month stay all you have to do is return the ADSL router and you are done. From the time I called them, they had my line activated within 24 hours (scarily quick). So it has cost me about 4000 THB for 6 months, which is dirt cheap by Aussie standards (where I'm from).

I am not sure if Buddy provide service to Suk area but give them a buzz and find out.

Service wise buddy has been quite ok, to my surprise. I haven't really had any downtime for the 3 weeks I've been with them (none that I've noticed anyway) and speeds seem to be reasonable for such a cheap plan.

It's about midnight here on a Wednesday night and here are my speeds:

Speedtest.net: Ping - 23ms, Download - 5.09Mbps, Upload - 0.46Mbps

Thaivisa Broadband Speed Test (against Singapore server): Ping - 265ms, Download - 0.64mbps, Upload - 0.33mbps

ThaiVisa Broadband Speed Test (against Bangkok server): Ping - 261ms, Download - 1.74mbps, Upload - 0.39mbps

The Thaivisa speed tests are lower tonight than they usually are, but that's what it is.

I mainly use my connection to download documentary torrents. To give you a practical idea of usability, last night I was able to download 6 BBC documentaries (1.7Gb each). Not sure how quickly - kicked them off around midnight and they were finished by the time I got up at 8am.

Good luck and enjoy Thailand!!!

Apey

PS: Worked out why speed tests were slower than usual.... wife is streaming the youtubez!!

Thanks BurpingApe for that. I have written to Buddy and received this response:

Dear sir,

According to your request, you 're staying at Legacy Suites in Sukumvit Soi 29. ,They doesn't have the contact with us. So the speed 6-10mbps cannot provide sir. If you have the Land-Line number from tot company you have to check the number with us. If it's in our area you can subcribe only 3 mbs speed. And you will get the modem with the cable sir.

The way I read this is that what they are saying is that I should check with Legacy that their phone line is with Tot and if it is then I need to give that number to Buddy and see if it is in their area.

I am assuming each apartment does not have their own private land line so would this mean giving them the main line for the apartments?

I could then get a 3Mbps connection

Am I reading their email correctly?

On an aside I contacted a few serviced offices and I couldn't find one that could offer a decent internet speed with no download restriction (not surprising really!)
