I need to find a list of phonetic symbols. Anybody know a good website. I have googled it but it all looks like a bit of a minefield.

A program to translate script from English to Phonetics to English would be quite helpful too.

There are many phonetics sites on the internet. Do you plan to teach phonetics in class ? what level are your students ?

If you have an ipad or iphone the British Council have an application containing the phonemes with three examples of the particular sound. I printed out envelope sized phonetic charts for my students and got them to stick it in their notebook. I work through the sounds step by step providing examples. Essentially though you are trying to get them to remember the symbol and the sound and this can be quite difficult unless you teach phonetics on a regular basis - which I do not. I personally find phonics/phonemes are best taught with small groups. You could also print out small cards with minimal pair words (and a picture) that sound very much alike such as 'gem' and 'jam', 'ship' and 'sheep' etc

If they are very young students maybe the 'Jolly Phonics' material will help.

By phonetic symbols, do you mean IPA and teaching listening/speaking? Or do you want phonics for vocabulary?

You are right, it's not that easy to find good resources for Thai transliteration.

There are quite a few of them, however. Personally, I prefer thai-language and thai2english; they both have large online dictionaries featured transliteration.

However, both do step off the formal IPA phonetic symbols. This leads to a huge ambiguity, especially in case of vowels.

I'm also developing a small application particularly for transliteration (not translation), but it is far from completion yet.

I'm sure most are aware of this. Also the American one - nearly the same.

I had never looked at these until presented in my TESOL course.
