Toyota V8 Exhaust Pipes Length/Size

Recommended Posts

back in the water yesterday

cleaned the bottom, fixed some minor damages along the "edge" side/bottom

4 coatings of paint

2000 baht

will install engine Monday morning

then, with the longtail in the boat will discuss/plan the "bum" extension with the boat wright

need the engine/longtail in the boat for that,

so as not to make an extension that limits the longtail's sideways motion

engine back in yesterday

very little equipment and fuel in the boat, ie light weight

just incredibly responsive and fast during the test drive around Koh Kred,

the acceleration is just tremendous.

this with a low quality screw, som serious damage to one of the blades.

I am becoming more and more certain that I should have a screw with higher surface area,

i.e. 3 blades and slighter bigger diameter.

current screw is 11.8 inch diameter and 15.2 inch pitch

I will try and find one 3*13"*13"

driving a boat in LoS, some funny aspects, similar to motorbikes going against the flow

around the world there are mainly two navigation/direction systems, IALA-A and IALA-B

-A is drive on the right and leave green to starboard

-B is drive on the left and leave green to port

Thailand is using -B on the open seas and along the coast (in the salt water if you like)

whilst they apply IALA-A in/on all inland waterways, lakes, rivers, reservoirs, kanals

lots of the Chao Praya and Klong drivers don't realize that and insists driving on the left side,

whilst some follow the system correctly

  • 1 month later...

shit, ain't easy

2nd of April I gave the boat to the chap who was going to do the spoiler stuff so that it will measure more than 10 meters rather than 8.9 meters

it took the guy 1 month and 1 day to do the bum extension, chap works a few hours per week.

got the boat back and ready on 3rd May (last Friday)

called the Marine Dept the same day, made an appointment for the surveyor to come and see/check on Monday this week

the guy measured and took down misc data re boat and the engine

was not really interested in the bum extension (which is quite nice actually and also kind of useful and not only cosmetic lip service)

he said, V8 and 8.9 meters no problem now, will talk with boss and fix the 3 relevant documents tomorrow, no sweat

he relieved me of a bottle of Black, then demanded 1000 baht for covering fuel for his car, having travelled twice to see the boat

(15 minutes drive from his office!!!)

then he took off

next day he [honed and said sorry sorry cannot cannot do the papers,

I have to go to the Marine Dept main office in Chinatown

He had communicated the data and pics of the boat to the boss in Chinatown.

shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

called the chap in the main office, made an appt for yesterday at 11.00

at 11.00 sharp I turned up, secretary said the chap was busy in a meeting,

she did slip him a not at the meeting re me,

10 minutes later the chap turned up said sorry but would be busy a few minutes in a meeting

after having waited 1 hour and 20 minutes I pissed off

double shit!!!

a couple of pics showing the bum extension

attachicon.giftut-1.JPG

attachicon.giftut-2.JPG

everything in light blue and strong yellow is new ie everything to the right of /aft of the grey section

before 8,9 meters, now the boat measures 10.03 meters, i.e. ample length for 8 cylinders and 260 hp

the stuff in light blue is way more than just lip service

they are two air filled/watertight compartments

they will contribute significantly to both longitudinal and athwartships stability

also the buoyancy will increase significantly when the boat rolls and or sets in waves

will see what the chap in Marine dept main office have to say when I get a chance to meet him.

another good thing with this bum extension is that it doesn't affect the steering, that is the movement of the longtail

also, the total length from nose of boat to the end of the driveshaft remains the same.

not sure I should believe this, but maybe

this morning I telephoned the surveyor chap that enjoyed the Black Label and the 1000 baht (see above)

I was gonna ask him if he could email me the photos he took of the boat during the last survey

(my ideas was to use the photos at the surveyor dept in Nakon Phatom if Nonthaburi and Bangkok failed)

the chap said the following;

the day after my (failed) trip to Chinatown to see the surveyor boss at the main office,

the boss in BKK had called the local office in Nonthaburi and said that it was OK,

they could issue the papers to me

the Nonthaburi chap was on holiday this week but would be back in the office on Monday,

I should call him then and then agree a day/time for picking up the papers etc.

funny,

nobody thought of informing me

anyway, I'll believe this when I see the papers

life ain't boring here in LoS

  • 2 weeks later...

hmm,

turned out that what he said on the phone was probably true,

got my papers sorted and went to see him last week,

he was fully prepared to dish out the two surveyor documents and the Tabian Ruua until he discovered

that I did not have a Tabian Baan.

I said not needed (it is not a legal requirement in LoS) and I have paper from immigration.

he consulted the local boss, nope, no way If I could not produce a Tabian Ruua.

mega shit, the Nonthaburi office doesn't know the Thai legal requirements.

problem is that they have never dealt with a foreigner before

and all the Thai guys just automatically produce their Tabian Baan.

so,

back to the Marine Dept main office in Chinatown tomorrow,

ascertain again that Tabian Baan is not required and that my doc from immigeration suffices,

and have them call the loacal office and explain it to them

hmmm.

You can get a yellow Tabien Baan you know, if you are married and you live on your wife's property.

yes, thanks, am aware of that.

think you can get yellow Tabien Baan also if you have your own condo.

Anyway, the Marine Dept main office in Chinatown were crystal clear, Tabien Baan not required.

They listed 3 options;

a) tabien baan

B) work permit and accompanying visa

c) address certification letter from immigration

I'll go for c), they gave me copy of such a letter so that I can show immigration what I want

quite helpfull

they also showed me the work permit/visa variant in another application

when I have that letter from immigration and go back to the local office, if they still refuse,

just call us and we will sort out the local office they offered

the boat did almost sink the other day

in this season there are frequent extremely low water,

I cannot keep the boat where I usually keep it.

I kep it by the house of the chap who did the bum extension

Moored with the sides facing the klong.

There is all sorts of rubbish in the klongs, the more dangerous stuff is steel rods and old bamboo rods stuck in the bottom and poiting upwards.

Turned out there was a piece of bamboo under the boat, in the evening som rather big longtail boat passed at full speed, resulting in

sizeables waves.

The boat rolled heavily and banged the bottom straight onto the bamboo crap, which went straight through the bottom.

Considering that the bottom is made from 7 mm plywood it doesn't take much to penetrate it.

It is strong though, the atwhartships beams are made from hardwood and are only 30 cm apart.

Have automatic bilge pumps, luckily the carpenter heard the pumps working and working and luckily he checked,

and lifted the stern out of the water,

and fixed the bottom with gluing and screwing on a piece of plywood the next day.

Guess I will improve the size and number of automatic bilgepumps.

Don't fancy the boat sinking again.

ain't easy this tabien ruua stuff

marine dept gave me a copy of the kind of document I would need from immigration

some days ago went to the imm. office in Nonthaburi,

had to speak to some supervisor, explained that this is a legal req. in Thailand in order

to get a tabien ruua and could I please have such a doc

(had prepared all the necessary supporting documents

the supervisor dude not the least interested, not even polite, the only thing he kepty on saying

was mai tyam mai tam mai tam

you go embassy,

I tried to get across that Marine Dept does not accept address certification from embassies

Mai tam mai tam mai tam

what the <deleted>

then went to BKK imm at Chaeng Wattana, some senior people there, they speak good English and are reasonably service oriented

took me a few hours, spoke to several with loads of gold on the shoulder;

they were symp. to my problem, and could agree to write the required doc.,

however, they were reluctant since I stayed in Nonthaburi and not in BKK.

anyway, they phoned the Nontab. office and explained this and that on the phone and apparently

it was agreed that I could come the next day and get my letter

next day I am off to the Nontab. office agaim

what the <deleted>, ended up with the same supervisor dude,

the essence of his communication being mai tam mai tam mai tam

was pretty pissed off when I left

next day contacted Marine Dept main office, explained that Immigration refuses to issue to doc, what the <deleted> do I do

it appears that they discussed it with the local Marin Dep office in Nonthab. and agreed that they could relax the

documentation requirements a wee bit in this case.

went to MArin Dep yesterday, handed in my documentation, re address/90-day report etc and the docs related to boat and engine

the chap asked me to call back on Tuesday next week, he assured me that it would be OK after he had talked with the local big boss

we will see, I believe it when I see it

They don't like you have a nice boat. It's just jealousy.

right, I'll keep that in mind

got to sign a doc with the Garuda on top last week, probably promising

according to the office the docs should be ready today,

I have an appt for 11 tomorrow

we will see

right, got it today, finally

Tabian Ruua in my name and address, THB 1740 fee (including the survey document).

Took a while and quite some patience and jai yen.

Funny the way they issued the doc. both the survey doc and the tabien ruua states LOA to be 8.9 meters,

that was the LOA before I did the bum extension (so LOA became 10.03 meters) to satisfy the regulation that requires

a minimum LOA of 10 meters for more than 8 cylinders and 170 horsepowers.

The same docs also states 8 cylinders and 260 horsepowers.

Guess its OK as long as they issue and stamp the docs.

This particular boat requires that the driver has a motor mechanic license.

My current mechanic license (issued last December) covers engines up to 125 kilowatts, whilst the 1UZ is about 185 kilowatts.

I have to wait until Xmas (1 year) before I can upgrade my mechanic license from class 2 to class 1.

Shit,

been struggling with this since Xmas.

Off for a beer or 2 now.

thanks,

took me a while and a considerable amount of jai yen,

not so much money though.

haven't bothered to do much with the boat until I had the tabien ruua,

now sthe real work starts;

re do the bilge pump arrangements

the search for 3 or 4 bladed screw

go from 2 to 4 exhaust pipes

test out water in the exhaust pipes

will keep me busy for a looooooooooooooooong time

This must be one of the longest running threads (1 year and 8 months) I religiously follow!

And thinking it started with just some questions on the exhaust for a V8 engine :) :)

Yep, pics whenever possible!

I often wonder if the long tails here have the correct propeller.

the big longtails you see in central Bangkok mostly use a 15" diameter 2 blader on 1" shaft, and I'd guess the pitch to be between 14 and 16 "

nearly all these boats are powered with 4 or 6 cyl diesels

2-section boats like mine;

the larger ones use 12" diameter and 15" pitch (2 blader) on a 7/8" shaft

most of these boats use 4 or 6 cyl diesels, some use 4 cyl benzin running on gas

the smaller 2 section boats use 9/10 " diameter 2 bladers with pitch around 14-16 "

nearly all of these boats are powered by 4 cyl benzin engines, (like what you find in taxi meters)

and they run on gas

I am reasonably sure that most of the boats would benefit from using 3 bladed props

with 2 bladers you don't get sufficient prop surface area

have visited a few prop factories trying to buy a 3 or 4 blader,

but they only sport 'em in huge sizes, 16 or 17 or 18 inch diameter,

they say they can't down size without a model prop to copy

sorry about the lack of pics,

but I'm mostly alone in the boat, so ain't easy to capture anything but the interior

or the boat when moored outside the rim klong house I'm renting

re props;

as far as the diesel powered boats are concerned I don't think the 2 bladers are too far off,

the diesels are relatively slow reving

but for the benzine (gas powered) engine boats I think the 2 blader is way off

the problem for me with 2 blader is not as much top speed,

but the ability to get the boat up and in plane at lower speeds when it is loaded

(this is a prop surface area problem I think)

the boat is an absolute pain to drive when not planing

right now it is quite light, me, some ropes, some fenders, and 30-50 liters of benzine,

its a dream driving it, high speed and low speed

(have taken out floor boards and all the cushions, tools/spare parts etc)

couple of days ago I very very easily did 45 knots behind Koh Kred, no wind and flat water

engine had plenty of revs left to go on

(had the canopy up so going beyond that speed would be pushing my luck)

Marine Equipment Shops

Anybody know of a reasonably well stocked mar. equip. shop in BKK or near surroundings?

So far I have been doing my shopping at Ocean Marina in Pattaya,

and getting a bit tired of travelling to Patts for small things.

Link to comment

just a short burst on the pedal while doing about 38 and it easily jumped to 45,

with a lot left in it

the 16/4 blader is a lot heavier and that would require a change of the drive shaft

also would have to redo the Haeng Bpla (fish tail)

the fin coming down from the shaft tube to protect the screw

but sure, will think of that..
