webfact
9 reds sentenced for arson in Udon Thani The Nation Nine red-shirt supporters in Udon Thani were sentenced yesterday for torching the provincial hall in the aftermath of the riots in Bangkok in May last year, while 13 others were acquitted because they had done their time for smaller crimes. The Udon Thani court also ordered the nine, convicted of arson or damaging government property, to pay for the damages. Three of the arsonists need to come up with Bt142 million, two have to pay Bt57.7 million, while four of the convicts need to pay Bt20,000 each. They will be charged 7.5 per cent annual interest until all the money is paid. The longest jail terms for the five arsonists, including a man who was a minor at the time of the crime, range between 20-and-a-half and 22-and-a-half years. One convict was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail, while three others got two-and-a-half years. Defence lawyer Khanittha Ratthakarn said she would appeal the verdict. The 13 convicted for lesser crimes were initially sentenced to six months, which was then halved because they confessed and later waived because the judges believed they had served enough for their crimes. On Thursday, 13 red-shirt supporters in Mukdahan were each handed a 20-year term for torching the city hall, while 16 others were acquitted. Defence lawyer Anont Nampha said they would file an appeal against the verdict. -- The Nation 2011-10-
jonclark
" Three of the arsonists need to come up with Bt142 million" Ouch...that's a bit more than the 500 bahts they might have been paid in the first place to attend the rally.

scorecard
Now looking forward to some comments from the paymaster, jatuporn, and especially nattawut who said in plain langauge that he would take full responsibility. Perhaps the paymaster, who is clearly the ultimate mastermind, might like to pay the 142million etc. But i ain't holding my breath. pimay11
I wonder why Jutaporn has not been indicted on accessory charges. These reds were only following his orders as one of the red leaders. During one of his democracy speeches which can be seen on Youtube he said "If you seize power from us, then we'll burn the whole country down. Burn it, burn everything, my brothers — Guarantee: Bangkok will turn into a sea of flames. Those of you who live in the country, it's OK if you cannot join us. If anything happens, just gather at your provincial or city halls. No need to wait for the order. Burn your city halls down to the ground." That's one of the reasons why Jatuporn was in such a rush to push for elections, so he could hide behind his parliamentary immunity once again. That also was the reason why he lamented while in jail that he should be allowed to vote, that it was his right as a citizen (although 'normal' people serving terms in Thailand generally lose that right). Without the right to vote he could not have stood as an election candidate.

The same amnesty that absolves Abhisit of his crimes and brings Thaksin home. Its just a show for the onlooking punters. Steely Dan
I'm sure a rich foreign based benefactor could come up with 142 million baht - though I admit it's cheaper publicity to have your name plastered on aid vehicles.

I'm afraid that benefits of illegal behavior are funneled to the top, whilst any repercussions sink to the lowest ranked fall guy available - According to the gospel of red democracy of course. :jap:

Imagine, now we can accuse the government of wrongfully sentencing peaceful red-shirts in purely politically motivated cases.
