Free Web Design Software

Featured Replies

Hi. I'm having difficulty finding a free web design software kit that doesn't pressure you into buying the upgrades at a later date, or one that has features which you don't need to pay extra for. If someone knows of a a software package that doesn't do either, could you please let me know.

Thanks

I should add. I tried Joomla and Serif, they didn't work out for reasons mentioned above. The main reason I want to build a site is to show photographs of events.

Try wordpress and if all you want is a photo type site everything you need is free.

My understanding was that they focused more on blogging. I may, at times, need to upload several hundred pictures at a time.

Wordpress was and is a blog platform, but it has advanced to a degree where anything can be done with it. There is a plugin that you can get (free) that will handle what you want. You can see an example of a wordpress site if you check out my signature and add dot com to the name.

Do a quick search for wordpress photo plugins and see if anything will work out for you.

Ok, thanks I'll look into that. As mentioned, I need something that can handle large photo uploads and has a lot of storage (about 20gig)

The plugin will depend on your needs and you just have to find one that suits you. The storage of 20 gigs will come from your hosting service for the site and will not have any effect on the plugin itself.

If you want something that will handle 20 gig of uploads in 1 shot that may be difficult, but a lot will depend onyour hosting provider. You may want to do a search of hosting providers that will be able to handle the large amount of pictures.

Wordpress dot com is free to host your site, but may have limits on uploads.

Forgot - one plugin for wordpress is nextgen gallery. I have used it myself and always had zero problems.

I've done the initial design and setup on quite a few Joomla sites for various people. Can't say I like it much but it has never required any payment for anything.

Wordpress is probably simpler for the end user, if you dont need the fancy plug-ins that are available for Joomla.

Look at some of the host providers "outside" of Thailand. They offer many features, that are not really operated or supported by host providers within Thailand.

If you choose to do business with a Thai Host Provider in setting up a Word Press site, then be prepared to do all your research and modifications on your own.

Speaking from experience.

If someone wants a recommendation, I've been using DreamHost for a while and it's perfect if you want to have "free hands". You get full ssh access even with the cheapest web hosting there.

For desigining, I use Inkscape and pen & paper. Both are free. biggrin.gif I usually develop the whole site from scratch, but I realise WordPress and similar are easier and less work for most people.

I would second dreamhost as a provider as I have been with them for 7 years. They do offer unlimited space and hosting of domain names and sub names, but the bandwidth has a limit. You could check and see if they would work for you. If you decide to use them I can give you a special discount thing they let us do and can save you a little money. For the basic hosting it is $120 a year.

If you decide to use wordpress do not do the automatic install some hosting providers offer. Upload the files yourself which will give you greater control.

If you have any more questions just ask
