Does anyone here on the forum donate blood?

I was wondering if you can go to any of the hospitals here to give blood? I used to donate in the UK as I have a rare type and would like to do the same here is possible.

Matt.

They sometimes have a blood drive at Tesco Lotus (at least once this year).

Bangkok Samui Hospital (the one out by Bandit Airways office) also had a list of farangs with 'not too common' blood types (I am a universal donor) along with their telephone numbers. We get called in emergencies.

The last one was the plane crash on Samui. I received an SMS asking me to go to Bangkok Samui Hospital to give blood.

Nathon is probably the only place that takes blood on a regular basis, not sure if they want farang blood though. I heard somewhere that there are difference??? Others with more knowledge might know if this is true.

Thai blood is different than farang blood? It's early, but that might top my "Ridicolous statement list" for the day.

Not just Thais - all Asians. (Mind you - I could be digging a bigger hole here :whistling:)

OK - did a quick search.

"Comedienne Gina Yashere is actively involved in promoting donation within ethnic communities. "There are a lot of black and Asian people out there who desperately need help, and they can’t get it from anyone else but their own communities. It’s something we’ve all got to consider, because we're the only ones who can help each other,” she explains. " from an article

"Gina Yashere: minority blood and organ donors"

So - there might be something in it. Come on folks - does anyone out there know?

I have only been asked to donate blood for farangs. Never Asians.

If the OP is from the UK he may not be able to give blood here due to vCJD threat.

Interesting. Unfortunately I am from the UK. I was born there in 1977 - so was definitely resident between 1980 and 1996.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have never been asked about the CJD questions. I too am from the UK and was resident there until 1992. Other donors on the list are ex-UK as well. Strange.

It certainly does sound very 'thai'.

As a layman (and a Brit) it does seem very much over the top, however, IF it is a rule here yet some people Brits have been able to donate without being asked it does raise questions about the quality of the blood supply here and about what else they don't bother checking about.

Would be interested if anybody in the know can clarify if this restriction is correct and still in place???

Rhesus negative blood is unusual among Asians.

So if you live here and have rhesus negative blood, donate.

Over the past four years the Samui Rotary Club have held two days, one at BKK Samui and one at Thai International Hospitals where we invited expats living on Samui to come along and have their blood type checked by hospital staff and their contact information was collated on to a database which we circulated around all the Samui hospitals.

We currently have no plans to update at the moment but I will let you know if and when we do it again.

If you wish to be added to this list, please send me via pm your blood type and phone no. and email address and we will circulate an updated list to the hospitals.

Any information given is on a strictly confidential basis and the Rotary Club will not use contact information themselves for any reason, nor will the lists be passed on to third parties (other than the hospitals)or sold.

Please also indicate where your blood type was verified. It should go without saying that should anyone be called to give blood by a hospital, further confirmation tests for quality, type and overall acceptability will be carried out by the hosptals before donation is possible.

As far as we know, there are no regular blood collecting sessions on Samui, stored blood coming from Suratthani.

The database is used by the hospitals to call people following an emergency when blood is needed immediately, so maybe even a call during the night could be expected.

Hope this helps.
