Kindle From Amazon Uk

I'm a Brit. I'm in the UK right now although I spend most of the year in Thailand. I'm thinking about buying a Kindle from Amazon UK.

If I do, will I be able to download books from Amazon UK when I'm in Thailand - without using a proxy server service?

I ask because I know I can't download mp3 files from Amazon UK when I'm in Thailand unless I use a proxy server service to fool the Amazon UK website into thinking I'm still in the UK.

You won't have any problem.

Amazon cares about where your account is located, not where the Kindle is. As long as your Amazon account is using a UK credit card and address for payments/deliveries, you will continue to be able to purchase on the UK store regardless of your physical location.

Yes, can also confirm the above, I purchased a kindle via ebay USA, I registered to amazon whilst I was in LOS using my UK account details,,,, no probs purchasing/downloading ebooks whilst in LOS.

I don't think the Credit Card has any bearing.

I have a Kindle 3G (the larger format unit) purchased by my daughter from Amazon UK and hand carried to Thailand.

My Amazon Account is with the UK but paid by a Thai AMEX Card.

No problems whatsoever and I am still amazed at how quickly books are downloaded into the Kindle - usually within 30 seconds of purchase online.

That said I cannot purchase MP3's etc. via Amazon.

The 3G/WiFi Kindle works through your Amazon account, doesn't matter where the Kindle is. I'm on jobs worldwide and download books what ever I like and where ever I am, no problems at all. The internet connection is for free by Amazon, anywhere in the world.

In other words, have you given Amazon UK a Thailand address as your MAIN address?

At the moment Amazon UK have a UK address for me, although this may change soon. So I'm wondering if I give them a Thailand address if they will stop supplying me, including Kindle downloads (if I go ahead and get a Kindle!).

I am resident in Thailand with a Thai credit card. I bought my Kindle on-line from Amazon USA, and I buy books from Amazon UK; all with my Thai credit card and Thailand address. As P_Brownstone said, there is an issue with selling music to different countries; but books, both physical and electronic are not a problem. I have been buying books from Amazon UK for as long as I can remember whilst living in various Asian countries and using Asian credit cards.

Are you by any chance using a UK proxy server in order to do this?

I ask because posters on the Kindle Forum on Amazon UK are insisting a customers can only download - and I guess they mean legally - if they are registered with Amazon UK as UK residents.

Afternote: Kindle Forum posters agree that if Amazon UK customers are registered as UK residents then, yes, they can download from Amazon UK while abroad (on holiday, for example), as borne out by some of the posts in this thread.

Just checked my Amazon account, I don't see anywhere where I am required to record my actual home address. My default marketplace/ 1Click address is my address in Thailand, and I have various other addresses recorded for when I send Amazon gifts to friends and relatives. My registered credit card is from a bank in Thailand.

They have been happy to send me physical books for years, so no surprise to me they have no problem supplying electronic books. I was a little concerned when I bought the Kindle from the USA that I would be forced to purchase from the USA Amazon Store, but there was no problem ordering from the UK instead.

Given that Amazon have set up a service to send Kindles round the world, it wouldn't make sense if they then refused to sell you the books to read on it (which is where they make their profit).

Note that if you're registered with a non-US address with Amazon your prices are about 2 bucks higher per book than if you're registered with a US address. This is supposedly to cover the cost the 3G network, though it also applies to Wifi-only Kindle owners .

I have also received books and DVDs by mail from Amazon UK for many years, but when I registered my Kindle I was informed that I had to use Amazon Pacific for e-books; this isn't so good as obviously there are many British books missing from the US list. Like you my default mailing address is Thailand , but my payment card is Channel Island-based, so it's odd that you are UK Amazon and I am USA - your good fortune mate!

I will have to contact Amazon again to try to change to Amazon UK for e-books; thanks for your information.

I'm going back to the US for a visit in January......want to buy a Kindle 3G, keyboard....but want to be able to use the 3G when I return to my home in Thailand. I also plan to get a local library card back in Texas....in hopes that will allow me to download 'library' books as well.

I'm confused by some of the conversations about two types of Kindle 3G.....if I buy one in the US (from Amazon delivered to my daughter's Texas address), how do I ensure I get an international model?

If I buy the international model, will I be able to download library books from a Texas library?

I just purchased a book from Amazon.com using my UK credit card and billing address.

In Thailand

Arrived on my Kindle straight away (over wi-fi)

And my Blackberry (kindle app)

It's a US Kindle keyboard, delivered to a US address, doesn't have 3g, just wi-fi.
