At least nine southern provinces have been hit by heavy floods following several days of heavy rain.

The weather department has warned several provinces, among them Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Patthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Trang and Satun, of flash flooding, as further heavy rain and storms are expected in the next few days.

Local residents living along the eastern coast should also be cautious of high waves in the next few days.

Police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayoh said of the nine floodhit provinces in the south, Patthalung has been the hardest hit.

Meanwhile five districts in Songkhla were named disaster zones as a result of flooding on Friday.

Soh Hemmakul, chief of the rescue and mitigation office in Songkhla, said Governor Winyu Thongsakul had named Saba Yoi, Kuannieng, Rattaphum and Singhanakorn as disaster zones, as almost every area was under high water.

The inundation has spread, with the level of floodwater between 50 and 70 cm after continuous rains.

A threeyear and sevenmonthold boy in Saba Yoi district reportedly became the first casualty of the flood in the southern region. He was in a car that was swept away by the floods.

Ninety-nine families of Lae Bang village were evacuated to a shelter at a school after the flood hit their areas.

Most of Saba Yoi is affected every year by flooding.
