Brazil Football Legend Socrates Dies At 57

Presume you are referring to the Italian game which Brazil lost 3-2. The game was a tragedy for football with the scintillating Brazilians going out to the less than exciting Italians. Brazil were behind twice and came back. Socrates got the first goal a superb effort. Brazil gave away the 2nd thanks to a mindless square pass across their own area. Falcao made it 2-2 and Rossi got his hat trick and the winner when the ball was returned in after a corner and Junior miles behind the rest played him onside.

Most neutral football fans felt depressed to see the outstanding Brazilians going out.

Yeah that was the game. Sad as it was if you are not right at the back then you are on the back foot.

Problem was that Tele Santana put absolutely no emphasis on defense. Coupled with that you really don't pass the ball square across your goal mouth.

Socrates was also completely like minded to Santana believing its not so much about winning but more about how you play. I remember him referring to the last Brazillian world cup side coached by Dunga as an affront to Brazillian gootball culture.

I too was very low when the '82 side were knocked out. I remember it felt like the end of the competition to me.

I was lucky and priveliged enough to see him play in Gothenburg in 1984. It was the 30th anniversary of the 1954 World Cup Final Sweden v Brazil. Brazil won the friendly match 4-3 and Socrates was the difference between the sides. His influence on the game was massive. It was as though he was playing against children. Very sad for him to die so young. RIP maestro.

Nah it was when the French lad got booted in the face and had to come off. The Italian Keeper should have been sent off and a free kick awarded. That let the Italians win a World Cup they never deserved...being the third best side in the competition.

France v Brazil would have been something else though....

I wonder are you referring to the West Germany-France semifinal whden Schumaker the German goalie came charging out and flattened Battison the French player. The bastard was not even booked when in fact he should have been sent off. Battison was carried off. The game finished 1-1 and went to extra time and finished 3-3. Guess who won the penalty shootout.

Yes...that's the one. Well I was only a young laddie at the time!

I still say the France side were the best in the tournament....that moment robbed them as they had used all their subs.

Paolo Rossi visited Brazil in 2002. He apparently hasn't aged that much. He caught a taxi, but about an hour away from his hotel the taxi driver who had been constantly checking him out in the rearview mirror, suddenly said, "Are you Paolo Rossi?" to which he replied "Yes i am."

The taxi driver stopped the vehicle in the middle of nowhere, kicked him out and told him to go home!
