Running Different Cables And Wires Together.

Featured Replies

A "sparky" (I use that term loosely) installing the outlets into our home is running the satitle cables in the same PVC coduit as the 220v wires.

I am concerned it disrupting the signal.

"All of these low-voltage wires (satellite, telephone, alarm, etc.) may share a single wall box AND should be placed next to electrical outlet boxes. Do not locate these low-voltage wires in the same wall box as higher-voltage household electrical wires or near or across fluorescent lights or motors" http://www.southernsky.com/prewiring.htm

Very bad idea. Not only for affecting the signal, but for safety reasons too! I have often seen this in Thailand, but it should not be done.

This is correct.

Although not ideal, I doubt very much if it will affect your signal, you need alot higher voltage than 220volts to affect your satalite signal, and safety wise if its done carefully then it'll be ok, there are alot more worse installations around in Thailand.

Thanks for your replies, I need to confirm my thoughts. Looks like this will be my 5th sparky in the last 2 weeks.

collinthailand20005: Thanks but I disagree with that attitude regarding any wiring. I do agree that it is disgusting the wiring here in new houses even. I 'mai pen rai' allot of things, but my electrical is not one of them.

Below a reply form Crossy today, a sparky active in the DIY forum and familure with Thailand:

"NO!! Never run power and data or signal cables in the same containment. Apart from the possibility of interference (and these do exist) there are safety issues. What happens if you have an insulation failure on your power cable (crappy taped joint perhaps) and 220V gets into your satellite or network cable. No problem with a dual outlet but the incoming cables must be separated."

Fully agree with Crossy - I am not an electrician but sell a lot of equipment to Petrochemical Refineries and Terminals and all Signal Cables (Intrinsically Safe) must be installed in separate Conduits from the Power Cables. Many things can destroy insulation here - including insects getting into the Conduit - if you get a short circuit between the 2 different types of Cable your equipment can become "live".
