This is sooo true.
I ride a bike wherever I go in Thailand (except Bangkok). Also in Vietnam and Laos.
Chiang Mai and Phuket drivers, to an extent, are pretty respectful to the road rules and bikes, but everywhere else, forget the rules.
When guests tell me that they want to rent scooters, I warn them of this scenario along the lines of 'when you are riding the scooter, you must assume that everyone else in a vehicle is trying to kill you'.
Why would an insurance scheme designed for Thai people cater for farangs and even if it did it would be the most basic medical care - most Thais also have their own medical insurance so they can access the private system...
