Songkhla Ancient City Wall To Be Completely Restored

The 175 year-old Songkhla Ancient City Wall built during the reign of Rama III has now been completely restored after parts of it collapsed during the end of 2010 due to torrential rains and strong winds.

The 175 year-old Songkhla Ancient City Wall built by Rama III in 1836 has been completely restored after it collapsed along a 20 meter long expanse as a result of cracks that formed due to torrential rains and strong winds.

Officials from the Fine Arts Office Division 13 have been working on restoring the wall for more than one year.

Metal has been used to reinforce the wall, both inside and out, at 1.50 meter intervals.

Ancient rocks were used in the restoration as to retain its cultural value.

Now, the wall is stronger and will be able to handle heavy rains.

Deputy Governor of Songkhla Province, Somchai Mekha-aphirak, disclosed that the Ancient City Wall is highly cherished by Songkhla residents.

They are delighted that the wall has been completely restored and are welcoming tourists and encouraging them to visit the Ancient City Wall, one of the most renowned historical attractions in Songkhla Province.

Abhisit pushing FROC to Solve Southern Flood

The opposition party leader urged the Flood Relief Operations Center, or FROC, to quickly solve the flood crisis in the South.

Opposition Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said he was surprised to hear the FROC chief Pracha Promnok denying his responsibility for the flood-hit areas in the South.

Moreover, Abhisit said the government should take a more active role in providing assistance to flood victims in the South, saying that they should receive benefits from the government's flood compensation programs like other Thai nationals across the region.

At the same time, the Strategic Committee for Reconstruction and Future Development is requesting a two trillion baht budget to run a long-term project that would last for 10 years.

However, Abhisit reaffirmed the exorbitant costs for the project is not worthwhile.

He proposed that the related agencies should hold a public hearing before initiating any water management programs.

In response, Pheu Thai Spokesman Prompong Nopparit said though the Prime Minister have not inspected the flooded areas herself, the cabinet has already assigned Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit to directly be in charge of the Southern flood crisis.

Prompong also blasted Abhisit that the Democrat Party also has several MPs in the southern provinces but they have also neglected in providing care for the flood victims.

20 workers rushed to hospital following chemical leakage

Chachoengsao - A chemical container in a sprayed paint factory exploded Monday morning, causing some 20 workers to pass out after inhaling the gas.

The explosion, which occurred at 9:10 am, also caused fire to the RJ London Factory on Suwinthanwong-Min Buri Road in Chachoengsao's Bang Nam Pliew district.

The unconscious workers were rushed to the Chachoengsao Hospital and the other workers managed to control the blaze and put it out.

Major Buddhist Temple Celebrates 175th Anniversary

3G Network Connection To Be Utilized In Home Safety With Police Program

The Police Chief is aiming to install surveillance cameras and 3G network connections in people's homes as part of the the “Home Safety with the Police” program during the Songkran holiday.

Deputy police chief Police General Pongsapat Pongcharoen disclosed that during the Songkran holiday, the number of residents who entrust the safety of their homes to the police tends to double compared with over the New Year holiday.

It is expected that approximately 5,000 home owners will join the Home Safety program.

Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong has ordered officials to be prepared for the upcoming Songkran holiday, while the 3G network connection will be utilized for more effective home surveillance.

In Bangkok, the highest number of home owners who joined the program over the New Year holiday were from Chokchai District, followed closely by residents of Lad Phrao, Bangkhen, Bang Na, and Minburi districts respectively.

In nearby provinces, Nonthaburi recorded the highest number of participants followed by Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, and Nakhon Pathom respectively.

Truck drivers block Vibhavadi Road

Protesters blocked the frontage road of the outbound Vibhavadi-Rangsit Monday afternoon after their demand for the government to cancel the plan to increase NGV price is not met.

Yu Jiayuenyongpong, chief advisor of the Central Transport Association of Thailand, said the association decided to block the road as part of the measure to pressure the government to cancel the plan to increase the NGV price.

Yu said members of the association would also block three main NGV distribution stations in Khon Kane, Pathum Thani and Saraburi.

Earlier Monday, the protesters used 96 trucks, 55 private buses and two pick-up trucks to block two lanes of outbound Vibhavadi-Rangsit road in front of the Energy Ministry to protest against the planned increase of the retail price of NGV gas.

Chatchai Phu-aree, chairman of the association of truck operators, said the price increase would affect the people.

Chatchai said the government should not allow PTT Plc to monopolise the sale of NGV gas.

The Cabinet has allowed PTT to increase the NGV price by 50 satang per month, which will in effect increase the price from Bt8.50 per kilo currently to Bt14.50 by the end of next year.

Taxi drivers disperse

Taxi drivers protesting against the planned hike of NGV price dispersed from the roads around the Government House and the Royal Plaza Monday afternoon.

The protesters dispersed from roads around the Government House at 12:30 pm Monday.

They agreed to disperse after their representatives informed them of the result of a meeting with the government's representatives.

But many of them drove to join the protest of truck drivers on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road.

And the taxi drivers at the Royal Plaza dispersed at 1 pm.

Supalatorn Yothi, a taxi representative in the negotiation, said the talk reached an agreement up to a point.

As part of the agreement, the taxi fare would be increased if the NGV price was hiked but the taxi drivers would like the government to freeze the price longer.

Earlier the day, some 500 taxi drivers parked their vehicles around the Government House and at the Royal Plaza to protest against the hike of NGV price.

They started parking their taxis on roads around the Government House and at the Royal Plaza at 8 am.

But the drivers did not block the road with their taxis. They only occupied two left lanes of the roads.

Some taxi drivers also carried a banner, saying "cremation of NGV".

The taxis were parked on Phitsanulok Road and their vehicles spilled over to Rajdamnone Nok Road until they reached the Makkawan Rangsan Bridge.

Their leaders also organised a make-shift rally stage in front of the Government House and they took turn to criticise the administration for raising the NGV price.

They accused the government of taking an opportunity when farmers and the poor people were suffering from flooding to raise the NGV price.

They said the price hike severely affected their income and they were disappointed in the administration.

"We are sorry to have voted for the Pheu Thai. The increase is like betraying our votes for you, Pheu Thai," a leader said.

Fake Viagra Caused Fatal Heart Attack

58 year old former teacher in Trang Province died of a heart attack in a hotel after he overdosed on, what the local law enforcement believed, was fake viagra.

The Trang police rushed to the Thirada Garden Resort Hotel in Muang District of Trang Province after they have received a report of a possible homicide at 2.30PM on Sunday, January 8.

Pansak Chanprasert, a 58 year old former teacher turned contractor, was found dead on the floor next to the bed. He sustained no obvious injuries and was only wearing a towel at the time of death. The police suspected Pansak had been dead for approximately 10 hours. The time of death coincided with the testimony from a hotel staff which indicated the victim was seen alive at 1AM on Sunday morning.

Whin Chantaked, a 24 year old hotel attendant, told the police that Pansak was a regular at the hotel. According to Whin, Pansak would use the hotel's services 2-3 times a month. Whin said he last saw Pansak sending a woman into a taxi at 1AM on Sunday morning before he went back to the hotel room. At 11AM the next morning, the hotel attendant knocked on Pansak's door to remind him to checkout but no one answered the door. Whin later discovered Pansak was dead and had immediately notified the police.

The police found Pansak's personal belonging inside the hotel room. He was carrying with him lubricant, condoms and 2 packs of viagra. 3 pills had already been taken. According to the police's preliminary investigation, they suspect Pansak had died from a heart attack induced by the fake viagra and made fatal by his own congenital disorder. A more accurate cause of death will be determined after the autopsy is complete. Pansak's body would then be released to his relatives for religious and funeral rites

Kittirat: Govt to increase NGV price despite protest

BANGKOK, 9 January 2012 (NNT) - Commerce Minister Kittirat Na Ranong says the government is going ahead with the plan to increase the NGV price.

After a meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, the PTT, and the Finance Minister, Mr Kittirat revealed that the government would forge ahead with the planned hike. He asked the protesters to abide by the law given mob rule was not acceptable.

Groups of taxi and truck drivers have been blocking the Vibhavadi-Rangsit road in front of the PTT and the Energy Ministry, asking for a two-year delay for the NGV price increase. Some groups are also protesting in front of the Government House as well as at the Royal Plaza.

The cabinet has earlier passed a resolution for the NGV price hike to 14.50 baht, up from 8.50 baht, at the increment of 50 satang per per month, between January and December of this year.

According to the Commerce Minister, the move to increase the price is in accordance with the National Energy Policy Committee’s procedures. Protesting is by no means the way to solve the problem. He also asked the protesters to feel for related agencies and clear off the road so that other people would be able to commute.

BTS to collect fare from On-Nut to Bearing

BANGKOK, 9 January 2012 (NNT) - The BTS will start collecting 15 baht fare for the On-Nut – Bearing route, starting May 1st.

The 5.25-kilometer BTS route between On-Nut and Bearing has been in service for free since August 12th last year. The route, consisting of Bang Chak, Punnawithi, Udomsuk, Bang Na, and Bearing stations is an extension of the Sukhumvit route.

A 15-baht fee will be charged for the entire five stations from May 1st onwards. Initially, the fee collection was set to begin from January onwards, but it has been extended to help reduce commuting costs for flood victims.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said it would open the BTS train service, running from Wong Wien Yai to Bang Wa, on December 5th this year; however, it would open just two stations, Po Nimit and Ratchada-Ratchaphruek in the beginning. The construction of the two other stations namely Wutthakat and Bang Wa could not begin at this time as the sites are on the overlapping areas with the State Railway of Thailand’s train projects of Green and Blue lines. Both parties will discuss the problem next week.

DSI finds corruption in flood-relief bag procurement

BANGKOK, 9 January 2012 (NNT) – The Department of Special Investigation or DSI’s probe into an alleged flood-relief bag procurement corruption found 10 officials from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) involved.

DSI Director-General Tarit Pengdit revealed the findings of an investigation undertaken by the Department into an alleged corruption in the process of flood-relief bag procurement. He stated that a team of interrogation officers, led by DSI Deputy Director-General Police Colonel Eknarat Sawettanan, discovered that 10 DDPM officials had acted in favour of two private companies. This action is in violation of Article 157 of the criminal code regarding misconduct in office.

Thus, the DSI has prepared a case file and forwarded it to the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to launch further legal actions against these state officials since the DSI itself has no authority to do so. At the same time, the DSI also reported the results of its investigation to Interior Permanent Secretary Pranai Suwannarat, who would consider whether a disciplinary committee should be set up.

The DSI said it would continue to look further into the case to see if the two alleged companies have actually been involved in price collusion. If it found any evidence related to the procurement, the DSI would treat it as a special case. As for further allegations that a high ranking DDPM official had acted in favour of these two private companies contracted to provide the DDPM with flood-relief packages, the DSI found no evidence supporting the accusation.

Kittiratt: NGV/LPG fuel price hike to proceed as planned

BANGKOK, Jan 9 -- Deputy Prime Minister/Commerce Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong on Monday insisted that the price hikes for natural gas for vehicles (NGV) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuels will proceed as planned next week January 16, saying no attempted 'mob rule' pressure on the government will meet the protesters' demands.

Mr Kittiratt told reporters after meeting with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra who met urgently with Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, Permanent-Secretary for Energy Norkhun Sittipong and PTT Chief Executive Officer and President Pailin Chuchottaworn following protests by transport entrepreneurs.

Operators of trucks, private-joint city buses, taxis and passenger pickup trucks gathered at PTT headquarters, Royal Plaza and Government House, demanding that the government review and postpone increasing the price of NGV fuel until next year.

The protests have caused a traffic jam on Vibhavadi Road and around Government House.

Mr Kittiratt, who is also deputy chairman of the National Energy Policy Committee, told the media after the 35-minute meeting that he wanted to adhere with the cabinet resolution on Oct 4, 2011 on NGV/LPG price hike.

The premier said that the government should comply with the cabinet resolution, he said, adding that any revision of the cabinet resolution could only be done under certain procedures.

For any change, the cabinet must return the policy to National Energy Policy Committee which would reconsider and resubmit it to the cabinet for consideration, Mr Kittiratt said.

He said he did not know whether the resolution would be revised or not.

The deputy prime minister stated clearly that any solution of the problem should be sought through discussion, not by pressuring the government with protests and causing difficulty to the public.

Mr Kittiratt added he was worried if the protesters intensified their protest because he did not want the public to be affected by the protest.

He urged the protesters to submit a protest letter and hold talks to find a solution but not the use 'mob rule' and demand the answer they wanted from the government.

Under the cabinet resolution of Oct 4, 2011, the NGV price would rise, step by step, by 50 satang/kg every month and at the end of 2012 would stay at Bt14.50/kg from the present Bt8.50/kg, a 70 per cent hike.

The government would also increase the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Bt16.06/litre from the current Bt11.14/litre.

Meanwhile, Land Transport Federation of Thailand Chairman Yoo Chienyuenyongpong said his group would intensify their protest by blocking one or two more lanes on outbound Vibhavadi Road after already shut down its parallel road.

The group would block PTT Plc's NGV master terminal at Saraburi, Pathum Thani, and Kon Kaen with trucks, he said, adding that if there was no positive reaction from the government, the private joint city buses would also halt their services.

Mr Yoo said his protesting group is ready to negotiate with the government and if there is a clear appointment to discuss finding a joint solution with the government, the protesters would disperse. (MCOT online news)

AMLO has 147 cases, worth Bt600m, on books

Police Uses DNA to Identify PAO Head Shooter

A police investigation team is using DNA evidence lifted from bullet casings found at a murder scene in their attempt to identify the person who shot and killed the former head of the Samut Sakorn Provincial Administration Organization.

Police Lieutenant General Peerapong Damapong, who is the commander of the police forensic unit, reported that an investigation team is currently trying to identify the person who shot the former Samut Sakhon Provincial Administration Organization President, Udon Kraiwatnussorn by analyzing DNA evidence lifted from the nine bullet cases found at the crime scene.

Peerapong said that he is satisfied with the results, as police now have the DNA of the person believed to be the one who loaded the bullets into the clip.

The police forensics unit head also stated that this will be crucial material evidence if the case goes to trial.

Police Chief Police General Priewpan Damapong has explicitly ordered that all documents concerning evidence in the case be submitted to him as the case is a very important one.

The forensics unit has stated that it is uncertain when it will have all of the evidence gathered.

Meanwhile, Commander of Samut Sakorn Provincial Police Bureau Police Major General Tayarit Eakapaopan has indicated that the investigation committee will ask the National Police Office to seek permission from the Parliament to take Democrat MP Khanchit Thapsuwan, the primary suspect in the case, into custody.

At the same time, it will continue its investigation using the new DNA evidence.

Civic Network Rallies against Thai Troop Withdrawal

A civic network from five lower northeastern provinces gathers to issue a statement opposing the International Court of Justice's ruling and its order for the withdrawal of troops from the disputed area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple.

More than a hundred demonstrators from local civic groups in five lower northeastern provinces gathered at the Kantaralak City Shrine in Si Sa Ket Province to oppose the International Court of Justice's order for the withdrawal of troops from the disputed 4.6-square kilometer land surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple.

The group, which was led by Pramote Hoymuk, a member of the Land Protection Group from the southern part of the northeastern region, also donated rice and dried food to Commander of the 23rd Ranger Regiment Colonel Thanasak Mitphanont to give to soldiers operating near the ancient temple to boost their morale.

A steady stream of locals, particularly those from Kantaralak District, also turned up in support of the group and protested against the troop withdrawal from the Thai-Cambodian border on the Preah Vihear Temple side.

The group will continue their gathering at the Pha Mo E Daeng cliff in the Phra Viharn National Park before joining a religious ritual at Phu Makheua, which would be presided over by the Region 2 Army commander.

The gathering was peaceful with over 50 police and military officers stationed to maintain order.

Revered Buddha Statue in Angthong Sheds Tears

You can imagine the shock of locals and tourists alike to see tear marks on the face of a centuries-old Buddha statue in Angthong Province. 36 year old tourist Seksom Jangjit alerted reporters to the strange occurrence after seeing tear-like marks on the face of the Bhudda Mahabhuddapim, or Luang Por Tho, Buddha statue. The statue was first created in the reign of King Rama the IV in Angthong Province's Chaiyo District, approximately 18 kilometers outside the city center.

Upon inspection, reports saw two white marks trailing down from the Buddha's eyes and ending just above his mouth. Tourists and locals filled the temple grounds, taking pictures of the unexplained phenomenon.

The temple ground caretaker, 33 year old Nonglak Somprason, said the marks occurred approximately two weeks ago, but have since gotten more and more apparent and have become visible to the naked eye.

Deputy temple abbot Phra Paladfuk Apinunto admits that the occurrence is rather peculiar. However, he refuses to give in to local sentiment which suggests the markings are a bad omen. Locals believe that the fact that Luang Por Tho is crying means that something terrible is about to happen in Thailand. The monk said the marks could have been caused by bird droppings. However, he failed to come up with an explanation as to why bird droppings would cause identical marks on both of the Buddha's eyes.

The Bhudda Mahabhuddapim, or Luang Por Tor, Buddha statue is revered by locals of Angthong and nearby central provinces. It is one of only two larger scale Buddha statues built by legendary monk Som Dej Buddhajarn Tho Phromrangsri of the Rakang Kositaram Woramahawihan Temple in Bangkok.

Chemical Leak Knocks Down Paint Factory Workers

A chemical container at a paint factory in Chachoengsao Province exploded rendering 20 workers unconscious after inhaling the chemical.

They have been rushed to hospital for treatment.

Doctors and nurses at Chachoengsao Hospital provided first aid for 20 workers of RJ London factory situated on Suwintawong-Minburi-Chachoengsao Road in Bang Nampriew District of Chachoengsao Province.

Workers of the paint factory helped put out a blaze in the factory compound, after a chemical container exploded and caught fire.

Twenty workers went into shock and fell unconscious after inhaling the chemical.

Fortunately, the rest of the workers there helped put out the fire on time to prevent it from spreading to the factory's building.

Transport Minister Open to Raising Taxi Fare

The transport minister suggests the starting fare of taxis can be raised to help cab drivers cope with the hike in natural gas price.

Transport Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukampol Suwannatat said taxi drivers have not officially asked for approval to raise fare yet to cope with the natural gas price hike.

However, the minister remarked the fare hike must be reasonable and in tandem with reality.

Sukampol then said the strike of concessioned private city buses against the natural gas price hike will not cause much damage as their routes can be served by buses from the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority.

A proposal has been made to increase taxis' starting meter fare from 35 to 50 baht to cope with rising natural gas cost from 8.50 baht a kilogram to 14.50 baht a kilogram and the nine-baht increase for the price of liquefied petroleum gas.

The natural gas price will be gradually raised 50 satang a month starting January 16 until it reaches 14.50 baht.
