Yingluck plans to meet locals

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will hold her first overnight trip to the provinces next month as part of the government's campaign to stay in touch with local areas, a source from Government House said yesterday.

She is scheduled to spend February 14-17 visiting people in Phitsanulok and Ayutthaya, provinces severely flooded last October.

"The PM wants to get first-hand experience as her government plans to solve water problems in the upstream, midstream and downstream areas," the source said.

One of her main destinations will be the "Bang Rakam Model" in Bang Rakam district in Phitsanulok. The model is used as a pilot project to solve flood problems across the country and will be an integrated solution to tackle both floods and drought through efficient water management.

Yingluck will then head to Ayutthaya to see how the flood-hit province is restoring its industrial sector and ancient sites after the severe flood.

Cabinet's practice of holding overnight stays in the provinces was initiated by Yingluck's brother Thaksin. In 2006, the then prime minister chose a small district in Roi Et province, At Samat, as a place to spend the night, and broadcast his five-day tour live nationwide as a reality show. The scheme was later called the "At Samat Model". Adopted by officials, it became part of Thaksin's campaign to show his ability to tackle poverty and other problems of rural people.

Like her brother, who stayed overnight in a tent at a temple during the trip, Yingluck wished to stay in a tent as well, a source close to Yingluck said.

Deputy PM's secretary-general and acting government spokesman Titima Chaisaeng said the PM would not stay overnight in a temple as her brother had, but would make home-stays in villages.

After the overnight-stays trip, the premier is scheduled to hold her second mobile-Cabinet meeting in Udon Thani on February 21-22. Apart from chairing the Cabinet and a meeting with the Joint Public-Private Consultative Committee, the premier will visit local and business people, especially those in the tourism sector.

The premier also plans to visit the Thai-Cambodian border near Preah Vihear Temple, the source said.

awww shucks... missing out on the opportunity to show the common folk that's she "just one of them"... like her brother did when he had photographers make sure they took the propaganda photos to back that up after emerging from his evening splash shower at the temple, Wat Pa Ban Tad.

Mr. Humble, Mr. Humility... living the simple life.

until it was noticed that the "common man's towel" he was using was a 30,000 Baht imported, designer-label, linen towel purchased at Bangkok's Emporium mall.

While certainly quite good at fake PR at times, he had more than few huge guffaws like that one.

Will PM-Yingluck be leading a 'biker-gang' of her Cabinet, as her brother used-to ?

Will they get stopped and fined by the BiBs, for riding without helmets ?

Will the humble villagers have the nerve to explain how they're not actually receiving the promised B15k/ton for their rice ?

Which one of the rich-but-handsome group will the 'poor-Isarn-maid'-character fall-in-love with, who will play the role of the nasty middle-aged potential-mother-in-law, these Thai-soaps are all just so exciting ! w00t.gif

good point..

Perhaps to try and make good on her other promise of eleven million tablet computers, she'll dish out a dozen of her Samsung Galaxy Tabs (not that they are what the rest will receive) .

Thanks for that oldie-but-goodie photo ! tongue.png

Wonder why some of them were riding on the wrong side of the road, practicing for the subsequent World-Tour, or merely unused to sharing the road with other drivers, as a consequence of always having an escorted-motorcade ?dry.png

Thanks for the picture, what a classic. Are these people even human beings or from some distant galaxy?

I think it's a good idea for the PM to stay in the villages. She will get a lot of kudos in the hot season, som tum and laab wua, cold shower in the morning and squat lats with a chee toot.

I really want to see a pic of her "tent'.

I think you may have meant "goofs" instead of "guffaws"wink.png

I believe there were many guffaws (loud boisterous laughter) at Mr. Thaksin's priceless "goofs". BTW, his flip flops look cute.

I think Yingluck may be better off hiring some of the local farmgirls as advisers regarding her wardrobe when amongst the peasants.

After all, we can't have her wearing Gucci and Burberry when plodding through the paddies, can we?cowboy.gif

But this isn't here 1st stay in the provinces didn't she have an unsheduled stop because her helicopter could not fly at night...when next day they had an important meeting that she should have attended to answer questions ( convenient, as she not very good at that)

Maybe she would do better with meeting parliament members when they have a seating.

Titima Chaisaeng said the PM would not stay overnight in a temple as her brother had, but would make home-stays in villages.

Home stays at the house of one of those multi milionair ptp members she means probably.

After the overnight-stays trip, the premier is scheduled to hold her second mobile-Cabinet meeting in Udon Thani

I guess that will not only be her second mobile cabinet meeting but actually her second cabinet meeting since she was elected.

So in fact she only has cabinet meetings when the other cabinet members come look for her.

She will appreciate the country toilets and plumbing!

It crosses my mind that she is getting directions all the time from big brother, almost like her time is being fully managed by someone rather than herself. Its like being stage managed, after all the mistakes made earlier in her tenure when it was obvious she didnt have a clue. It looks too much like she is being directed rather than instigating things herself.

I am in Khao Yai and it looks like there is some local election going on. Every 200 meters or so there is a Peua Thai poster for the local candidate and i did not see one poster for any other candidates. Very strange.

Might just be that the public she is going to visit appreciate her taking a personal interest in their situation following the floods

A thoughtful visit that will do her government no harm at all.......which is why the visit attracts the attempted ridicule

Carry on Yingluck.....continue to be a people person it suits your style......leave the political bickering to those better practised and versed

Looks like the same nonsense that regularly comes from his Thaksin obsession.

1) it is not Thaksin who is visiting the villages

2) who cares if a billionaire has a Fendi towel?

It's just drivel and trolling/spam

"it is not Thaksin who is visiting the villages"

But as the OP reminds us, this idea of the Cabinet holding overnight-stays with the locals in the provinces was first introduced by former-PM Thaksin, towards the end of his final premiership ?

And is now revived by the fragrant/hot PM-Yingluck, surely in an attempt to recall to her supporters memories of that happy bygone era, or is it because she is indeed a clone (as her brother describes her) and has no other ideas to put forward ?

Some may see this as "trolling/spam", others as a mildly-funny reminder that this transparent ploy has been tried before, and by the same political-family too. cool.png

Begin removed ...

I imagine Abhisit did the same kind of things, in his own way of course, but at the moment I don't recall him making such excursions.

K. Abhisit had no need to make these type of excursions. The people flocked around in such numbers he had to fight them off rolleyes.gif
