The difficulty here is in defining who is a prostitute and who isn't. My first encounter with my Thai wife was a financial one, in other words I paid her to have sex with me. But I could just have easily have become married to an estate agent, a hotel receptionist, a manager of an Internet cafe or an optician. I did not pay for sex with them, but all these ladies had one thing in common, they intended to meet and marry a farang to improve their lives and the lives of their families. All are graduates including my spouse. They were from Chonburi, Sri Racha, Bangkok, Phuket and Khorat so no preponderance of Isaan

Can you truly differentiate between these 5 ladies? At the end of the day they will all cost you money in one way or another.

But that's life. Ladies from all parts of the globe sell their bodies in one guise or another. Even women who are of independent means often turn to their male partners for financial support.

Prostitution is here to stay. In UK it's endemic. The important thing is to make sex as safe as possible, and to try to dissuade very young people from engaging in it.

Prostitution in the UK is endemic???? Is this with respect to your first offering above, i.e. that all women are prostitutes because they all want something out of a relationship (men too?) ? Or do you really mean it is endemic as a trade ?

Personally, I can count on one hand the number of prostitutes I knowingly saw in the UK in a lifetime there - living and working in London. In Spain, I see many more when I visit my folks on an urbanisation (roundabout girls they are called because they hang around the roundabouts waiting for cars). Here, I can see them anytime I head to town - here (Thailand) it is endemic. Here it is overt - which is what Chewitt was talking about (as well as underage and trafficking).

With all respect to your wife, who I know nothing of - there is a difference between women that sell their bodies "short-time" for sex and a woman that users her sexuality to find a man. It's not purelt sematics either. It's more about intent - if the intent is to get money, then that's prostitution, if the intent is to get a relationship, then it's not. The prosititute in your line up would likely have gone from customer to customer earning her living - the others earned their living elsewhere and sought out that one perfect mate - tell me, to reverse your question, just what is the same?

The streets do need to be cleaned up a lot with prostitution in your face 24/7 and the image doesn't really fit that of a family holiday destination.

It depends on what street's you walk down doesn't it ?

But this article is incredibly naive for so many reasons, a big one being the very low number of one million prostitutes in Thailand first and foremost me thinks.

Stamping it out is simply impossible, perhaps better to try to discourage under-age prostitution, and to send a stronger message to the world's pedophiles, to go elsewhere ?

That's the sort of negative attitude that we can do without. Of course it's possible to stamp it out. It will be extremely difficult, but it's possible to clean it up. We need people like Chuvit to make a stand. It takes time to get these things done, but at least he's making a start, which is more than you're doing, which is sniping from the comfort of your armchair.

are you as nuts as Chuwit? prostitution is the oldest trade on earth and you will never erradicate it .... its simply impossible! on the other hand you can erradicate forced prostitution and human trafficking by licensing massage parlours and brothels just as they did in switzerland .... result, no eastern european slaves in swiss streets ... do the same in thailand and it will clean up lower sukhumvit and petchburi as well as lumphini and sanamluang .

Marriage is the most expensive form of prostitution.

Blah blah blah .... once again for this guy we see nice rhetoric....

Not supportive of prostitution but if it was stamped out then tell me the plan to employ the thousands of workers currently in the trade.. tell me the plan to support the thousands of families and children that have money sent to them each month.

Tell me the plan to maintain tourist numbers.

Again Im not advocating prostitution is good or right just saying it is so ingrained in Thailand that you just cant wipe it out without expectation that their will be extreme follow on effects.

A moral dilemma question.... girl with elderly mother, sickly father and two young children in North East.. she works in BKK. Sends money home each month such that children are fed clothed and educated, father has medicine and mother has enough money to put meals on the table and make a home.

Girl doesn't particularly like the job but knows she has no alternatives up home and rationalises that doing what she does is the best thing for her family.

Job does have one bright side in that she feels she might be able to meet a nice guy of suitable means whereas back home she has no chance.

So is it wrong waht she is doing ? Lesser of evils???

It reads a bit fairytale and rose colored glasses i know but actually have met some girls who are there for better life for their family and children. Yes there are the hardcore ones and the druggies and the game players but my point is that without some alternative plan for these people who do exist as written what do they do ??

Actually both farming and guarding (warior/soldier) are both older than prostitution - even blibically Cain and Abel were farmers - and in reality prostitutes would need to be paid, which suggests that there must have been income (whether cash or food) and hence an earlier job role. However, why does age make a role immortal? Not many witch finder generals left today - that's a pretty old job - how about hunter gatherer - spear sharpener???

They will never legalise prostitution here - not as long as it is run by corrupt politicians that have no interest in it and an electorate that looks no further than their own purses. Wonder how much money (in percentage to GDP) Switzerland made from prostitution?

Tourism from all countries (especially those like Japan, China, Taiwan) would drop off precipitously.

And, then perhaps we could all witness whether tourism (and esp this draw) was really ONLY 7% of the GDP here ...

Doubtful Chuwit means ALL prostitution, just that catering to Falang. So it could be possible to stamp out that very small portion of the overall prostitution in Thailand along with several Billions of baht to the poorest of the country. The rich Thai seldom have daughters or sons in prostitution.

"the colourful politician said he would go to the US Embassy today to provide information on human trafficking."

Why go to the U.S Embassy what has it got to do with the U.S, They aren't the worlds police or have authority in Thailand.

The guys intentions are probably good but I get the feeling that he may have signed his own death warrant. I lot of powerful and currupt people in Thailand will not like what he plans to do.

He signed it a while ago exposing the casinos depriving the BIB of income

.... Unless you consider daughters who choose specific career paths or schools for the express purpose of marrying a rich man who can 'sponsor' their lives ...

I know, ... but, you know? It's much the same thing; it's just fancier looking, and their skins are likely to be much lighter.

Does that mean the US embassy gets a 20% cut?

Here's an alternative scenario - girl with elderly mother, sickly father and two young children in North East meets a guy who says he owns a restaurant in Bangkok and will take her there where she will earn enough money for her whole family - when she arrives in BKK, after quiting her textile factory pittance of pay job in Isaan, she finds she is a prostitute - her choices, walk home (no accomodation) and let her family fend for themself, or become a prostitute and have to pay off her coach ticket, accomodation and bar stall rent - the rest she sends home - now caught in a world she can't escape from until eventually her tips and what she managed to squirrel away (or if she is lucky some guy farang/Thai/Asian takes her as a mia noi or maybe even GF) gives her the ability to escape. Now she is probably in her late 20's of above and what does she have to build a new life from?

If nobody wants to sell sex, it is a crime to force anyone to do so. But when men or women do want to sell their bodies, they should have that full right without encountering punishment or discrimination. If the client behaves decently, the relationship between the sex buyer and the sex seller must be considered a purely private transaction.

You are right Nicky..... But , that does not change the fact that prostitution is "illegal" in Thailand. Why should it be ok to flaunt one law and not another... surely its also up to an individual if he/she wants to take drugs...

Coulkd you please tell of any single law in Thailand that is upheld ?????

the majority of these girls have little to no education, and this is a way of providing sufficient funds for them to survive, and also to send money to family. The thai government needs to encourage the younger generation to try stay in school and also to provide good grants for 3rd level education.

Goverment schools are allready free and any Thai can get a loan to do University. It's not the government but the school boards that don't enable students do work part time, why? Because they hold classes, activities, and exams on weekends and after/before school hours so working part-time is not an option and moonlighting as a sideline girl the only form of work they can get. As for guys, yes they do it to, only half the guys in a gay bar are actually gay!

He may have specific information on trafficking to the States. If that isn't the case, and he is approaching because of world policing, that is another story!

On St Valentine's Day this year, 19 couples will register their marriages at the Giant Royal Flora Wheel and receive gold marriage certificates. Uppatham Nisitsukjarern, who heads the Project Management Office of the International Horticultural Exposition Ratchaphruek 2011, said the couples, chosen from a campaign about love, would not have to pay any fee.

Is this supposed to be the "feel good" part of the article?

"See, we do have normal love in Thailand. Not just crazy-old-ugly-beer-belly-warts-and-all-farang-marrying-a-girl-1/3-his-age-with-no-English-skills-or-even-a-junior-high-school-education-and-not-of-legal-drinking-age type love! Truely, this is Amazing Thailand!"

Smiles everybody... you're on Fantasy Thailand!!!

Oh bullshit. Can you seriously tell me you can personally distinguish between a 15/16 year old Thai and one in her 20's?

How is it that Thai Law forbids the selling of alcohol within certain hours (unless sinbon forthcoming)/closure times/overstay, ad infinitum, BUT prostitution, for which this silly little country world renowned legal (and perlease, no one bring up the Thai cop who used a 'used' condom as evidence against a Thai prostitute).

Unless it er, suits you sir LOL.
