Parents question exam format

THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- Questions in examination papers should be based on facts, especially if they are carried in a multiple-choice format, Prof Utumporn Jamornmann, former director of the National Institute of Education Testing Service (NIETS) said.

She said two questions in the Health Education section of |the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-Net) for Grade 12 |students were based on opinions, which would make it difficult to answer.

Some of the questions offered more than one correct choice, while in some questions, none of the options provided appeared to be correct, a teacher said on condition of anonymity.

The questions that have drawn the most criticism are: "What should you do if you feel a sexual urge?" and "What do boyfriends and girlfriends do together according to Thai tradition?"

Apart from these two, many other questions included in this year's test sounded rather stupid, and some parents said that they did not think the queries were testing either their children's knowledge or their common sense.

The teacher, who asked not to be named, said these questions were meant to teach students to analyse and think carefully before answering.

However, Utumporn said the answers were unclear.

"If test makers want to ask any questions based on opinions, they should offer more than one correct answer in the multiple choice, and each alternative should be given a score. An alternative that is closest to the correct answer should be given the highest score, while other alternatives could be given a lower score," she said.

Utumporn, who had faced similar criticism when she took over as NIETS chief, urged her successor to explain the questions with ambiguous answers to the public.

I can barely remember sitting an entrance exam for universities - however it's my belief that there are always some stupid questions mixed in with the "good stuff".

Does anyone have some examples of good questions that were asked? As a sample, here's a good question from the 2011 STAT test used in some states in Australia....

In an El Niño year, absence of warm water is likely to cause Indonesia to experience

A storms.

B reduced rainfall.

C cold wind blasts.

D stronger jet streams

And a rather more obscurely phrased question (though it does teach older english language interpretation)

Which two of statements (i) – (iv) below are most similar to each other in the attitude to equality

presented?

(i) Although men possess unequal powers, they nonetheless deserve equal rights.

(ii) Men are made by nature unequal. It is vain, therefore, to treat them as if they were equal.

(iii) Kneeling ne’er spoil’d silk stocking; quit thy state;

All equal are within the church’s gate.

(iv) The wealth of a nation consists more than anything else in the number of superior men it

harbours.

Yes, I was asking if anyone had some examples of "good" questions like that from the Thai exam.

Easy to pass this test then

"What should you do if you feel a sexual urge?" - Answer D - go out with someone of the opposite sex and try and get some.

"What do boyfriends and girlfriends do together according to Thai tradition?" - I assume one of the answer is C - Boyfriend sits smoking and drinking beer all day on the back of a pickup truck in the boonies whilst the Girlfriend works in Cowboy sending him his beer money.

None of those answers are at all correct nor appropriate.

a) Ask friends if you can play football together;

How effective is that in relieving a sexual urge? I think it would just reappear soon afterwards.

b ) Consult family members;

So a teenage girl should say "hey brother, I want to have sex. Can you help me?"

c) Try to sleep;

Only "try"? So the person who came up with this answer implies that it is difficult to sleep when you have a sexual urge.

Posted (edited)
d) Go out with a friend of the opposite sex;

Is this assuming that the sexual urge is for a person of the same sex, or opposite sex? Or homosexual people simply do not exist?

e) Invite a close friend to watch a movie together.

Is a girlfriend or boyfriend a "close" friend? Then let nature take its course eh?

I think e is the naturally correct answer (assuming that sexual intercourse would follow), The next best answer would be d. b is just sick (incest).

Humans are sexual creatures and sexual urges are what sustains animal life (including humans) on this planet. Why suppress natural instincts as if it's wrong?

Considering that most Thai males regularly visit and lose their virginity at the plethora of brothels.

I think they all know the answer to that question, but cannot answer because of FACE.

The recent O-net test that I saw was full of misspellings and poor English grammar, and had more than one correct answer for multiple-choice questions. Who devises and checks these tests? Can they not get an adequately educated and qualified native English speaker to ensure that the English is correct? These are EXAMS.. children learn from these what is correct and what is incorrect. If the exam is incorrect, children become confused and doubt their own knowledge/understanding of the question. That makes the test very unfair to the student. Please make sure this problem is fixed.

Take those australian questions again..... I'd hate to face those questions if they were written in poor grammer...... particularly the later ones I didn't bother listing

Question 64 relates to the following poem.

Grass

Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo

Shovel them under and let me work —

I am the grass; I cover all.

And pile them high at Gettysburg

And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun

Shovel them under and let me work.

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:

What place is this?

Where are we now?

I am the grass.

Let me work.

Carl Sandburg

64. Which one of the following best describes the tone of the poem?

A sympathetic, with a note of nostalgia

B bitter, with a note of derision

C compassionate, yet irritated

D contemptuous, yet humble

E ) Sadly ironic.

Of the poor choices B is closest.

Angry and bitter because of the loss of life caused by mans actions,

often for things that could have been avoided.

Yet life goes on, and cares not to notice of those laid low.

"All civilizations become either spacefaring or extinct." - Carl Sagan

"I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true." - Carl Sagan

They should ask a Carl Sagan question instead of a Sandburg question, Thaksin though, wanted a Karl Marx question.

Animals get into all kinds of stuff when they feel a sexual urge.

Here is the episode titled "Deviants" in National Geographic's "Wild Sex" documentary series:

Their conclusion of who the most extreme sexual deviants in the animal kingdom are may be surprising.
