LazyYogi Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Between Saigon and Phnom Phen, which would be the better place to spend a week to get away from Songkran? Or any other place with cheap flights nearby that anyone recommends?
LazyYogi Posted February 23, 2012 Author Posted February 23, 2012 On Samui, we only have one day.... I have to go across the boarder anyways around that time for visa reasons. Thought I might as well make a trip of it and go somewhere I've never been yet.

tutsiwarrior Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Ha Noi +1 or, Hanoi in Vietnam to youse tourists...PP can be an insufferable pedant at times...
cardholder Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I would take Siem Reap over Phnom Penh anyday. Where are you starting from ?
londoedan Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Bali or anywhere in Indonesia that can be reached via the cheap Air Asia / Jetstar flights. I've spent SK in Jakarta before and Batam, Bintan etc and nearby islands can be easily reached from SG. Hanoi in Vietnam to youse tourists...PP can be an insufferable pedant at times... Bit harsh no ? Its named Ha Noi on the maps I have for Viet Nam

Minh was the best engineer that they had and he resigned from a project that was doomed to go nowhere... 1
LazyYogi Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 I would take Siem Reap over Phnom Penh anyday. Where are you starting from ? Starting From Chiang Mai, but will probably bus it down to BKK. Cheapest flights I've seen to: -Bali $455 -Ho Chi Minh $185 -Hanoi $221 -Siem Reap $364 -Phnom Phen $95 -Penang $207 -Yangon $171 And then direct from CNX there's Kuala Lampur at $197, but don't really feel like going to Malaysia.
LazyYogi Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 Ha Noi Would like to see Hanoi sometime, but from what I understand it's even hotter there in April than anywhere in Thailand.

Phnom Penh looks favourite on those prices. You can then head south to Kep for a elaxing time (and crabs) or go north to Siem Reap.

Very good I don't wish to bang-on about Indo but I imagine the flight to SG would be cheap ((rtn maybe 5-6k THB) and then the ferry across to Batam for about 30S$ return. Once your there then the world is your oyster (well sort of). I'm going to spend SK in Pattaya and immerse myself in the full-on experience for 2.5 weeks.
fred110 Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 You can take a sleeper train to Penang. No fee for the visa, good food, nice beach at Ferrengi.
SlyAnimal Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 You know both cambodia and Lao both celebrate songkran aswell right? I've never personally been in either country for songkran, so I don't know if it's at the same level as Thailand though
PattayaParent Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Ha Noi Would like to see Hanoi sometime, but from what I understand it's even hotter there in April than anywhere in Thailand. HCMC maybe but Ha Noi is in the North and has 4 seasons just like Europe. It'll be spring there and cooler than here. Edit: a cool 26C compared to a warm 34C in Bangkok http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293924-s208/Hanoi:Vietnam:Weather.And.When.To.Go.html http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293916-s208/Bangkok:Thailand:Weather.And.When.To.Go.html
UbonOz Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Macau is nice, easy to get there and back. Has the casinos if you want Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa app God gave man a penis and a brain, unfortunately, did not give sufficient blood supply to run both at the same time.

Edit: a cool 26C compared to a warm 34C in Bangkok http://www.tripadvis...When.To.Go.html http://www.tripadvis...When.To.Go.html Hanoi and the northern coastal provinces are freeze ass in the winter and ye gotta remember most places have no heating... I went up to town (Hanoi) from the north central province of Ha Tinh last year during the TET holiday in Februuary and stayed in bed in the heated hotel room for a day to thaw out...always be sure to take some warm clothes to north Vietnam in the winter...I was unprepared and suffered horribly...

You looking to escape the Songkran heat? I went to Cameron Highlands in Malaysia about 3 years ago....I was tempted to stay longer as it was so deliciously cool and refreshing there. Not a lot to do but nature walks, golf, drink tea and then some more...I actually found it quite interesting for a week.

I must have been looking at the climate data for record high instead of average high.
Asianrider Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 On Samui, we only have one day.... Pattaya is in war mode for 7-10 days lol
rak sa_ngop Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 You know both cambodia and Lao both celebrate songkran aswell right? I've never personally been in either country for songkran, so I don't know if it's at the same level as Thailand though Last few times I have been to Vientiane I thought I would miss Pi Mai (Budhist New Year) only to discover that they started 1 day later than Bangkok and consequently finished 1 day later. So still got wet!
grumpyoldman Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Angeles City, where the San Miguels are cold, the girls super warm, and the only water hitting me is when I take a dip in the pool.
