angryfarang Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Does this stuff really work? Or is it snake oil? I'm just wondering if it's worth running some from time to time?
angryfarang Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Cool. Is this something you should just run 2/3 times a year and not all the time? I was recommended this: http://www.moreyoil.co.nz/details.php?catID=11&productID=7
BigBikeBKK Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Cool. Is this something you should just run 2/3 times a year and not all the time? I was recommended this: http://www.moreyoil....=11&productID=7 Really depends- if you run your bike(s) regularly and always use good quality gasoline then I think the need for FI/carb cleaners is minimal. Some of the better quality gasolines already have cleansing additives. But if you suspect that you might have some dirty/contaminated fuel or your bike will sit for some time without running then it's best to drain the carb(s) or on a FI engine to add a fuel stabilizer. In any case, never store a vehicle with gasohol in the tank and fuel system as gasohol will phase separate and can really muck up your fuel system.
monty1412 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Back years ago in university days i used to run a 1275cc Mini Cooper S. Upper cylinder lubricants like this ( we used to use one called Redex) work.. used to pull the plugs and squirt in a generous amount and crank over engine and let it then sit for a few hours.. then replace plugs and start up.. nice plumes of white smoke came out. Never did foul the plugs and when it came to do cylinder head gasket the mechanic at the time commented how clean the head and valve train was...in fact asked me if i had it off recently and had it cleaned. ( no pun intended) This was of course in a car motor and probably by todays standards not a sophisticated motor so will let others more in the know re applicability to MB engines if this would be beneficial but certainly saw upper cylinder lube work under those conditions and adding it in as per manufacturers guidelines to the gasoline cheers
wana Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) we have a fino thats got 23k on the clock and getting hard to start in the mornings ,i was thinking the carb might need stripped down and cleaned but i will try a bottle of this magic cleaner stuff first and see if makes any differnce i always thought it was snake oil also but worth a shot if its worked for some peoples is there any brand better than others ? Good old Redex!... I used to remember revving the hell out of my old MK2 Golf Driver, pouring crazy amounts of this stuff in to the carb air-intake and smoking out the entire neighbourhood! That was fun.

I swear by it although in Big C it is rather expensive at 380 baht for small bottle. You can buy the one - shots for 60 baht though I did use the stuff in the picture but with dire consequences - my Hayate wouldn't start and I had to just turn it over on the starter until it was flushed out. Arhhhhhh! Never had that with good old Redex. Go Redex goooooo.

Jayman Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) I have bought the small white bottles of redex here at Big C for like 69thb or so. 1 bottle is enough per treatment. I used to prefer the STP brand for like 99thb sold in a red larger bottle than the redex. Used to find it at lotus, carefour, big C. Haven't seen it for last couple years and been told by sales ppl it has now been banned. Too bad really, was good stuff. Edited March 14, 2012 by Jayman

Were the locals drinking it? i rememeber a brand of "damp start" for car ignitions was banned in europe because school children were sniffing it in plastic bags to get high glue ,lighter refill gas and many aerosols had to have sales restricted because of it even now 10-20 years later there are still glue sniffers in europe ,even in thai my friend gave a begger money for food once ,50 thb i think near kao san rd when we came back he had bought a tube of glue with the money and was in another world entirely very sad but what can you do .........?
