I have decided to build a Jeep as the ones for sale here are nowhere near the spec and condition I need and want and over priced for a bag of bones.

My plan is to end up with a CJ5/6 body and use a desent 4x4 set up and modern running gear as I will want to drive around Thailand and also go off road too, reliably.

The off road terrain I need to tackle is Samui hills with loose sand/stone rock surfaces. I wont be doing any serious rock climbing or offroading stuff just the ability to keep going and not get stuck. Idealy the same set up as the Suzuki Jeeps that work fine for that.

Fuel economy is an issue too but looking at a diesel 2.5 as the Jeep will be reasonably light . ( retired and on a budget )

I have full workshop facilities to do this project at my disposal.

My question is. : What Engine/ manual GB and 4x4 drive set up could people recommend available in Thailand to suit my needs. An older engine combo is fine.

Thank u for any advise and help

I would guess as far as parts availabilty, price, support & reliability Isuzu DMax with the 3L. Toyota would be good too, but there are a lot more old Isuzus around.

Use toyota engine transfer case and tranny, look for vx80 axles front and rear, I'd stay away from the Sami stuff as they mey not hold up under the weight, and the width of the axles may not be right... They can be extended but then your gonna have issues with finding or having custom axle shafts built... The vx80's will hold up well with 36 in plus tires and have plenty of locker and gearing options ie arb, Detroit ect.

Maybe look at the Suzuki Jeep Club ? There are many and a large following in Thailand

There are a number of these jeeps fitted with a diesel engine........ Last year was one with a 2lt diesel 4x4 with a Auto box for sale it was in good condition with leather interior but was a old one believe [if i can remember] about a 1988

I've got a 1980 Dahatsiu Military jeep that's been retrofited with a 2.5L Toyota Mighty X diesel engine and 5 speed gear box.

Runs like a champion and very reliable
