Thailand urges coastal evacuation after major quake

Bangkok, April 11, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand issued an evacuation order Wednesday for its Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, after a massive earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami alert.

Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea.

Felt it here in Patong - lasted less than a minute.

E: Clarification

Kamala is very busy with people closing shop, and everyone heading for high ground

8.9 richter earthquake just happened off Aceh Indonesia.

Felt it in Chalong, a slight vibration, could not work out what it was untill I read a post on facebook.

i am 100m off the beach at ya nui ... just went and rounded up the locals to higher ground in case ..no one aware of it at all <deleted> ? fishing boats heading out to sea as i write ..... unlikely to hit but better to be safe //

for those that read Thai:

http://twitter.com/#!/rawangpai

- this one says, tsunami waves as high as 3-4 metres expected to hit Phanga at 5pm, Krabi 5.58, Phuket 6.18pm

I cant verify authenticity of info....thats the thing about twitter.....its just something to keep watch of various bits and pieces, some of it might be eye witnesses, but others might be hearsay. please take the info with this in mind.

hope its all just a false alarm

ok, Disaster Warning Centre has released this

predicted time of possible tsunami for various places in south thailand

on the bright side, these are just warnings....

lets hope thats all it is

Just drove from Patong to Kata. Roads are crazy, thousands of people on the high points, cars parked both sides of the main Karon/Patong road and road choked. Patak road backed up from traffic lights all the way up the hill.

A lot of traffic heading up the hill off Nanai Road. Everyone seems well and truly aware of the situation now.

don't try drive anywhere on the coast road (at least between nai harn and kata), the traffic is at a dead stop

motorbike can squeeze thought for now

Helicopter just went overhead in north Patong. Going towards the beach. A lot of people walking up the hill behind me, some trying to protect their cars.

Just got a call with a recorded message (in Thai). Wonder if this is a warning message?

looks like the water is going out at patong (not my picture so not sure if that's true)

bbc news

But Bruce Presgrave of the USGS later told the BBC that the nature of this quake made it less likely a tsunami would be generated, as the earth had moved horizontally, rather than vertically, therefore had not displaced large volumes of water.

"We can't rule out the possibility, but horizontal motion is less likely to produce a destructive tsunami," he said.
