Thailand urges coastal evacuation after major quake

Bangkok, April 11, 2012 (AFP) - Thailand issued an evacuation order Wednesday for its Andaman coast, a popular tourist destination, after a massive earthquake off Indonesia triggered a tsunami alert.

Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre advised people in the area to move to higher places and stay as far away as possible from the sea.

Just drove from Patong to Kata. Roads are crazy, thousands of people on the high points, cars parked both sides of the main Karon/Patong road and road choked. Patak road backed up from traffic lights all the way up the hill.

Helicopter just went overhead in north Patong. Going towards the beach. A lot of people walking up the hill behind me, some trying to protect their cars.

Just got a call with a recorded message (in Thai). Wonder if this is a warning message?

bbc news

But Bruce Presgrave of the USGS later told the BBC that the nature of this quake made it less likely a tsunami would be generated, as the earth had moved horizontally, rather than vertically, therefore had not displaced large volumes of water.

"We can't rule out the possibility, but horizontal motion is less likely to produce a destructive tsunami," he said.
