There was a recent thread about traveling to Langkawi from Phuket by ferry

which takes 12 hours,Now the monsoon season is here i think by road would

be better

Checking the road map Phuket to Satun in Thailand is about 400KLM and a

ferry leaves from there to Langkawi, the ferry symbol on the map is the

same as the Ko Samui ferry symbol which are car ferries,Does anyone know

if it is a car ferry or just passengers and how regularly it runs

This might answer your questions a bit hopefully.

Thank You, yes it does, it seems they have secure parking at the ferry terminal

so we will leave the car there and hire a bike to travel around the island

If another couple are interested in going we have 2 spare seats in the car

We will be going this month, just waiting to get the roof fixed on the house

Sounds a great idea, have fun.

I am working there for 6 weeks in December and looking forward to it immensely.

Langkawi is a miniature version of Phuket, not much to do or see

Taxis are cheap, scooter hire expensive

No bars or bar ladies that should put a few people off

We will not return far more interesting places in Thailand to visit

Langkawi is a miniture verson of what Phuket used to be.

Taxis and drivers are cheap, so most people do not require to hire a bike.

I don't know where you stayed, but there were plenty of beach bars (bars on the sand) where I stayed.

Yes, there are no prostitutes in the bars hounding you to buy a drink for them and BS'ing to you while a DJ is playing music so loud you can not have a coversation with anyone. Langkawi is not a brothel like most tourist islands in Thailand. You do not get sex tourist going there.

Langkawi is small. It has some places of interest. Eg. the cable car. It is a place to retire to with a partner. Malaysia has some of the best foreign ownership of land laws for foreigners. Has very easy visa laws for foreigners.Eg. 90 day visa exemption stamp on arrival. Langkawi has been made a tax free island to promote tourism, so things are cheap. It has not been turned into a concrete jungle and exploited like Phuket.

"Far more interesting places in Thailand to visit." Can you define what you mean by "interesting." Can you also name some places in Thailand and why they are interesting.

Langkawi is only one part of Malaysia, like Phuket is only one part of Thailand.

It's a very relaxing place.

Thanks for the feedback Peter, but I don't understand: in the same sentence: 'miniature version of Phuket' and 'not much to do or see'.

stopped at the fave hotel, canang beach, issan has more historical temples etc than langkawi

beaches at langkawi do not compare to beaches on phuket, the majority of langkawi restaurants

charge a service fee of 10% but do not mention it on there menus, apart from a couple of waterfalls

and the ex prime ministers museum there is very little to see

Better of hiring a bike, stop where you want as long as you want without being shown things which

involve commissions for taxi driver

We stopped 6 nights but should have only stayed for 5 nights already seen everything

We stopped at the only resort beach of any size which was tiny compared to Patong or Kata/ karon

The island is duty free which is fine if you want to buy chocolates or booze not much else in the duty free shops

Are you comparing a whole province of Thailand with one small tropical island in Malaysia???? smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png

If you expected Langkawi to be the "Phuket of Malaysia" - that was never going to be the case.

I'm glad the beaches on Langkawi are not like the beaches on Phuket - always sad to see another tourist extorted out of their holiday money for a fictious scratch on a jet-ski. :)

If you hired a bike, and didn't get a taxi or driver, how do you know they stop at unwanted places for commission???? I have never experienced that when I have been there. It is not like Thailand - "money number one." You are not viewed by the locals as a "walking ATM."

The atmosphere and lifestyle on Langkawi is more comparable to Thai islands like Koh Samet.

I agree.

See above post, "Langkawi is a miniture verson of what Phuket used to be." Emphasis on the words, "USED TO BE."

Wrong sport, we hired a taxi on our first day there for 4 hours to take us around the island so i

do know what i am talking about

The beaches are more like the beaches at Cha Am, the black sand beach is covered in rubbish

and filthy yet its supposed to be a tourist attraction

As i posted previously we will not return, just wanted to see what its like and we have

Been to Ko Samui twice and enjoyed it and will return there again

i could tell u 50 islands in thailand that are better than langkawi. langkawi is a commercial resort island with way over the top prices for food and hotels ,

and the beaches are below average by thai standards.

i cant believe namkanman is saying that most islands have prostitutes, loud music etc ..what a load of rubbish.

u can find many islands in thailand where there is no bars/barladys or loudMusic.in fact most of them are like this.

btw how would u describe a sex tourist ? let me guess, a white middle aged man with an asian women?

Yes there are still islands like that in LOFS although sadly Lipe is no longer in that group.

The Langkawi beaches at Tanjung Rhu and Datai Bay are excellent, and the natural beauty of its forested geoparks like Hole in the Wall along with diverse wildlife are far superior to anything in Phuket IMO. Great local food and outrageously cheap booze, an absence of touts and scammers (not to mention a starkly contrasting rate of violent crime and corruption) make it worth an extended visit for me. Penang and Pankor too if you're headed South.

We are staying at the Tanjung Rhu Resort and that has great reviews. The crime aspect makes it very attractive for us also. Thanks for your very positive post.

The food was good at some places but certainly not cheap

Thai food there did not taste like Thai food in most places

600 baht for a 150GM steak that was only suitable to resole your shoes

The only decent restaurant we found was the Orkid Ria seafood and Thai retaurant

packed with customers every night from 6PM all the rest were empty

Beer about 60 to 70 baht a can in restaurants, i usually have 2 or 3 cans and could not care

less if it was 150 baht a can

What do you mean by that comment, the hotel was clean, airconditioned and had a comfortable bed

and close to the restaurants etc, We slept there at night and stayed in the room in the afternoons when

it was hot, thats what hotels are for i certainly would not live in onetongue.png

You certainly no little or nothing about Rawai, there are much cheaper areas to rent or buy in with a lot more bars

Where do you live the north of the island, reminds me of Langkawi up there

So, you go to Malaysia to eat in a Thai restaurant and expect it to be authentic Thai, like it is in Thailand. :) :) You probably shouldn't have gone in the first place.

You remind me of tourist who comes to Thailand, and then heads straight to McDonalds to eat. :)

Peter, there are an abundance of good restaurants with variable pricing.

This is your experience which one must respect, but many of our ex pat friends who have lived on the island for many years are very enthusiastic about the island.

Again its a question of preference/choices, budget etc. I would never have gone to Bali had I listened to all and sundry, I must see for myself.. and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves away from the maddening crowds.

For me the beach life here in Australia is amazing, but we are more than happy to explore the Asian aspects to see what they have to offer us. As it has been said there are loads of other places to see if one wanders off for a few days making Langkawi your base. I am looking forward to it, and hopefully be able to share our experiences with other members with photographs also.

Happy Days!

Langkawi is a island reached by ferry or plane, how can you make that your base to visit other places???

You will not be taking many photos in my opinion

I did not meet many expats who actually lived there a total of 3

Seen the place we have no wish to go back again, much better places in Thailand to visit

I am glad you like the place you sound like someone involved in the tourist business there

We had a holiday in Bali last year and will not be returning there again either its much changed

from 15 years ago

I do not have a budget for holidays if we want to see somewhere or something we do

I am certainly NOT in the tourist business , on reflection that could be a bonus if I were!

I will be taking a stack of photos I do hope that is Ok with you lol !!

I have lived in Thailand for many years, I was brought up there/ schooled etc and my father continues to live there.

Peter for someone who has been in Malaysia for 5/6 days only, I really cannot be taking your views seriously.

Hence I have started my own thread,

We were in Langkawi for 6 nights and thats what the topic is about

You will be arriving by plane, have you actually been there before

i have had holidays at other destinations in Malaysia and enjoyed them

There are not thousands of tourists there without expats

Low season in Phuket has far more tourists than Langkawi

Have a great holiday you may even decide to retire there

Its not mine or my wifes cup of tea

Thanks Peter.. we are much to young to think about retirement ..we are just starting out in life.. right now love living in Australia.

I have been to Langkawi with my folks many years ago. but this is an entirely different holiday with my wee family now.

Some friends of my folks have retired in Langkawi and love it... always good to keep a very open mind.

"Low season in Phuket has far more tourist than Langkawi." - as stated before, Langkawi IS NOT the Phuket of Malaysia, and thank God, Buddha, Allah etc etc it's not.

Is this why you were disappointed in the place? No prostitues, touts, tailors, criminals, drugs, violence, scams etc. :) :)
