Reconciliation bill 'just for Thaksin's benefit'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday questioned the merit of a reconciliation law being pushed by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobumrung for amnesty for fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Abhisit said if the proposed law was really intended for reconciliation, it deserved widespread support. "But if it is just aimed at whitewashing Thaksin's wrongdoing, I won't support it. I saw no reasons why Thai people have to help with the whitewashing."

Abhisit also said that he did not think the reconciliation law would help tackle the social problems used by Thaksin and his political allies in inciting anti-government protests by the red shirts while the Democrats were ruling the country in 2010. He was referring to the inequality between social classes blamed by the protest leaders for causing the country's problems.

The Democrat leader, who was prime minister in the previous government, said Thaksin's video link last Saturday was likely to be his last if Chalerm could push for passage of the bill. He said it was always the Pheu Thai Party's first priority to clear Thaksin of all the legal problems against him.

Responding to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's remark that the reconciliation law was a matter for Parliament, Abhisit said he believed the matter was actually a government policy. He said it was a Pheu Thai strategy to keep Yingluck away from the law to avoid accusations of a conflict of interest, as Thaksin is her brother and the law would help her family.

Dr Tul Sitthisomwong, leader of multi-coloured shirt group, yesterday submitted an open letter to the PM to suspend payment of compensation to victims of the 2010 political turmoil or their families. He said compensation should be paid after it was proved that the victims' deaths or injuries were caused by state officials and that they committed no crimes or acted against officials during the demonstration.

The reconcilliation bill to be put before parliment should be for the good of the whole nation, not for the benefit of an individual. To push through a bill that would benefit Thakshin alone would deepen the devide, not repair it, he is a polorizing influence in this country, for the government to continue to focus its efforts on assiting the PM's big brother to return instead of focusing on what is actually needed for the good of the whole of the country will only do damage, both in the long and short term.

That's an airtight disclaimer if I ever saw one....and that they committed no crimes or acted against officials during the demonstration the whole dam_n demonstration was a crime(s)!!! If this was actually followed strictly not a single satang would be paid out.

Be nice if the reds could figure this out. People died because of him and he doesn't give a shit. Think before you vote. Money is not all.

Will AV ever realise that his incessant whinging and mud-slinging at Thaksin brought about his embarrassing poll results?

I think it's the incessant actions on the part of the PTP that's bringing about their embarrassing poll results. 100% focused on bringing Thaksin back and not focusing on helping the poor people in this country. Read the news today. It's full of reds complaining. And for good reason. They might finally be waking up!

Not true. There were a number of people killed and injured who were not associated with the red charade.

As it should be.

What other country in the world gives rewards to people for breaking the law.

Putting the devil himself up for PM with all the (lies) promises the PTP made during the campaign would have been a success.

That AV managed to do so well against that proves his true popularity.

There is some truth in what you say-about 10 per cent. Money paid and promisses made, got them elected, Thaksin did not get even Half the votes. But formed the government, But as you see everyday their antics and lies and actions give most a laugh, P.M.--red shirt leaders-Joke == win or not.

But the 3 million people want to govern the other 62 million people. In a dictionary what do you call that? I think the word begins with a "C".
