How Is This Teaching Inthailand Everyone Is Talking So Much About?

Featured Replies

I hear so much about it, read about it online. If you want to find a job abroad fast, it seems, then you better start off by teaching.

I am about to go to Bangkok for a job-hunting trip. I have been applying for countless jobs, but when it came to Skype meetings the process has haulted due to either bad connection or time difference. I decided to make it easier for the employer, and come to them - if they rudely enough not even offer to come to Germany for a job-interview. ;)

The things is, one job I got offered a lot of times is as a teacher. As you might have noticed however, I am not a native English speaker, and my Thai is at the Sawasdee level. Therefore I can´t see how I could actually be a useful teacher. My professional background is in Marketing, Sales, Business Development and Customer Service.

However, teaching English (or German) in Thailand is not something I would throw away if I had the opportunity - at least as a starting point. But I won´t just do it just to have a job. No student deserves a teacher who is only teaching with half of his heart and mind.

I wonder, is there someone out there who is a teacher, reading this forum, who maybe could show me how the world of the English teacher in Thailand is actually like?

Someone who can explain me the benefits and disadvantages, or even take me to work, if possible? While there, I could of course offer my help for free.

My goal is to see how the life of the typical English teacher is like in Thailand, and if that would actually be something for me. It should have some win-win to it, as I could see myself teaching for a while, to enhance my people skills, but the student has to be in the center. If he is not learning from me, and I turn out to be a bad teacher, I am no value for that certain someone.

I could have accepted many English teacher positions already, some real, some fraud - but I just won´t do it before I actually know how I can best help, what the advantages and disadvantages are.

I hope that there is a helping soul out there, willing to enlighten me. :)

Kind regards,

Bjørn Kristensen
