Wifi Booster ? Repeater To Redirect Outside Signal To My Room ?

Featured Replies

Hi

Is there a WiFi repeater or booster that will take the WiFi signal that the Hotel supplies ?

And redirect I would like to redirect it to my room ?

its outside the room in the driveway / parking lot area is where the antenna is located ,

There is an Air Conditioning unit outside the window that I could mount it on , and it has a direct line of sight to the Antenna.and a wall socket for power is close.

What can I use ? I get 2 bars out of 5 now and would like 4-5 bars

Thanks for your ideas

BK

Get a Linksys 2nd router, use as wifi bridge. will probably cost you about 20 to 30 bucks.

Keep in mind that while a repeater will extend the range it has the down side in that it will cut the bandwidth/speed in half since it's spending half its time talking to the antenna/another router and the other half talking to your computer. Ex: say your Wifi modem/router transmits a 20Mb internet connection (or that antenna you refer to)...your computer will get a 20Mb connection assuming the received signal is strong enough; but add in a repeater to relay that Wifi signal/boost the signal strength and you will get 10Mb max....signal strength may now be much stronger but you your max speed will be 10Mb. So, you may have doubled your signal strength but lost half your bandwidth/speed in doing so.

If you are still getting good bandwidth/speed and no/few disconnects due to the lower signal strength it may be better to leave it alone.

I bought a USB WiFi dongle that has a screw on antenna , plus another antenna with a magnet on it and a half meter cable

add in a 2 meter cable and with luck I can sit near the window with the antenna on the AirCon box and get better than what I had before.....

This will probably work but if not the cantenna will be the next try

I would love to just buy a booster/repeater but if it cuts in half an already low signal than maybe this is better,

But I may have problems with my iPad , but first things first :)

thanks
