Came away from Airport Plaza this arvo a disappointed man bah.gifsick.gifermm.gif

No sign of Frenchie despite 2 lovelies who suggested they could assist ... what did they mean, asking if I like Greek ?wub.png

If they were Thais they would have asked if you liked geek. So in essence, they were trying to invite you to watch Monty Python And the Holy Grail and play some World of Warcraft.

Seriously, guys, did anyone think to inquire about his nationality and call the appropriate consul/embassy? It's very possible he has mental problems and some family member in his home country could help if they only knew he was wandering around Thailand, disoriented and begging for money.

My opinion, he should go to ask to Thai people because they will surprise (just in begining) how Farang which in their idea have more comfortable life could ask money , it's mean he has really problem (first positive thinking) , then with pity they will try to help even not much money but may be another beter things come out more such as call the embassy, search the way to do to help him,... I don't know, just speak what I and a few Thai friends ever do and gonna do but sometime you get more disappointed with unhonest stories , lost small money but big feeling that you realy would like to help someone when come in difficult situation in the life.

i first encountered frenchie on silom road in about 1996 or 97, and a few years later in chiangmai. always the same rap. he's still around, and so am i.

That long, amazing, I wonder what his real story is?

There are many like him crawling the sois of Koh Samui and Phuket (and one would imagine all over Bangkok) looking for prey. Once when I was on Koh Samui I was approached by a guy - I think he was Australian but I am not 100% sure and it doesn't really matter, who had a similar story, i.e. lost his passport, was waiting for a transfer, needed to get to BKK, etc., etc. He was well dressed and groomed and was very convincing. Later that day I saw him again and he was still working the tourists. A local told me that he had been on Koh Samui for about 5 years living off of the proceeds of his scam. He had me fooled but I didn't part with any money.

Yes, we all get accosted by these people, in Thailand and elsewhere, but 15+ years is what amazes me....

If I don't know the true story of someone that ask me money, just only listen what he/she say, I will not judge the people they are con man or not con man.

A man come to ask me just small money, I can give 5 or 10 baht then he will go away like many begger in the street but I see (you see too from your senses) he was very sad and I would like to hear his story how come his life like this and he told me the story almost one hour with tear full his face, I asked everything what I would like to know from him also where he live (one day, I would like to go to check , if true may be can help to fine a chance for them and I do not need to be millionair to do that), how to go there, why children abandon him and his wife,... when you would like to help somepeople or many peoples, just help! do not need to think so far after helping, you happy and they happy, end. But if you come to think may be he is not correct same many con man or whatever you call, for me I will let pass but stil remember very good the story and if one day I meet him again I will listen may be same story or may be not, no problem learn everyday from your life.

No sorry....I realise you are not a native English speaker but I read this 3 times and still don,t know what you are saying. I will copy into google translate see what it says.

I doubt that he has mental problems NancyL. He sounds like a professional conman that has been successfully using the same scam for years - just like the guy I ran into in Koh Samui a number of years ago. Crazy like a fox maybe...

But would those gullible tourists give some loose change to the genuine afflicted people you see dragging themselves around on a skateboard or a single crutch stick.

These are even sadder if you've seen Slumdog Millionaire and if you've heard the stories of abducted children, which at least a few years ago were pretty real, incredible as it sounds. Don't give them money.

Good thing in Thailand in order to scam for cash all you have to do is put on some dark glasses and sing incoherently from a portable Karaoke and you make more than any factory worker... Thais like to pay for Karma, everybody wins ;)

A man come to ask me just small money, ...

There's a truth to that. The fact is the man came to you and begged for money. That means he needs to beg for money, which also means he probably needs the cash. On those grounds alone I think it's reasonable to give them a small amount and move along. I don't care what the tale is - if it's a lie, it's the truth, who cares. As long as they're not trying to scam you for a lot, give them a little.

The problem is not individual beggars, it's organized criminal beggar gangs - those it's not so easy because if you give them money you indirectly support a criminal organization that rips off poor people at best, and that makes cripples out of abducted children to milk them for money at worst. That's the issue. If it wasn't for that, I'd do what I did in the west, I had a budget of $1 / day for beggars and I'd give it to the first person asking - no matter what their tale.

There were some pretty creative beggars in the US...

Kind thought, but between the two of us I was definitely the more desperate and disoriented (but please don't call my embassy)

Suspicious timing too -> Refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moruroa. I suspect this guy is probably a nuclear physicist who lost his job when they stopped testing at the atoll.

Driven by rage he hatched a plan to strike back at the chardonnay socialists and do-gooders who trampled upon his dream, and who cast him upon the employment scrapheap.

What delicious irony that he now takes money from those self-same members of the chattering class to garner the supplies needed to complete the 'dirty-bomb' upon which he labors nightly in the back of his squalid shack in Santitam.

I think what he is saying is if someone asks you for money, just give him 5 or 10 baht and send him away.you don't have to be a millionaire to do that..if he is having a sad face ask him about his problems..personal, family etc etc...if you help someone just help him, do not think whether it's right or wrong or whether he is a con man or not.....and if you meet the same guy again in future asking for alms he may tell you the same story...or a new sad story.

so do not get upset as this is an on-going process.....i think this is what the OP is trying to say if i am not wrong...burp.gif

I can't speak for Nikster, but I've seen this quite a bit with my own eyes. Just a few weeks ago I was eating with my wife and son at a very popular Kao Ka Moo place near Chan Puek Gate (the lady cook wears a white cowboy hat) and I witnessed the above mentioned post. The man was being lead around by an elderly Thai lady, and he was wearing dark sunglasses pretending he was blind while singing into a microphone plugged into a small amplifier. As the guy begins to walk by, my 3 year old son unaware of him pushes out his chair towards the man, and he flinches reaching out his arm and looks down at my son. I don't know, either this guy was like the that Blind Shaolin Monk on Kung <deleted>, or the guy could flat out see. Anyway, I was flabbergasted when my wife gave the guy money. I said: "The guy isn't blind, he's just trying to make believe he is so he gets more money. Why did you give him money?" Her answer: "I know, I just wanted him to go away."

Reminds me of one 'blind' guy on Thapae Road some years ago. I was walking on the sidewalk (quite narrow) and my normal walking speed is double what the Thais are doing. Then from behind comes this guy with black sunglasses equipped with a white cane (I have seen him before around the area) and he was speedwalking past me and avoided all the obstacles. Guess he was late for an appointment. tongue.png
