Police hunt for chemical attacker

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Acting on widely circulated postings in the social media about a serial chemical attacker in Bangkok, police are now dispatching teams of detectives to roam Bangkok streets to sift for clues, while security camera footage is being scrutinised.

While the online postings referred to five incidents, police have identified only four of them, including the most detailed account, by a woman identified as Tao claiming to have been the victim of a double attack on the night of May 11. More cases have since turned up in media reports with victims showing up with records of treatments for wounds caused by chemical burns.

Apart from Tao’s case, acting Bangkok police chief Pol MajGeneral Khamronwit Thoopkrajang gave details at a police press conference of three other cases. An incident at around 7.30pm in Bang Sue police's jurisdiction and another two incidents both on June 4 in Phaholyothin and Sutthisarn police's jurisdictions. The three police stations and Lumpini police, which received a complaint from Tao, are working together to solve the case, he added.

The officer said a single attacker was likely, and that none of the victims had personal or business conflicts with anyone.

Bang Sue police later identified a fifth case, which was reported by a victim on May 31 but not acted upon until media coverage of the matter caught the public's attention. A senior officer, Pol LtColonel Wasuthep Khongklom, said the liquid used was not an acidic substance, but possibly an alkalinebased chemical mixture, which can be equally dangerous but whose ingredients would be easier to acquire than acidic chemicals.

Police are also seeking details from doctors who treated patients in the cases to find out the type of substance used in the attacks.

A second victim to give a detailed account to police yesterday was attacked on May 31 in front of Big C Mall near Saphan Khwai intersection while she was about to use a pedestrian flyover. She later stopped by at a shop and asked for water to wash away liquid that landed on her neck and arm. She later said that although the wounds were healing she had been mentally affected by the attack.

Lumpini police later said that all footage captured by cameras in the area before May 11, when Tao was attacked, had been deleted and footage taken from privately owned cameras was unhelpful.

A police psychiatrist, Pol LtColonel Dr Anchulee Theerawongphaisal, said the attacker, while likely of normal intelligence, was mentally twisted and possibly had bad or traumatic experiences with women. She called on women not to stroll alone on Bangkok streets and to pay more attention to their surroundings.

According to the other English newspaper: "police have arrested a scavenger suspected of carrying out a series of "acid-throwing" attacks in Bangkok"

When the police catch him they should splash acid allover his face see how he likes it.

And that should be followed up by a public flogging Passion-Of-The-Christ style!

Captured already and charged for spraying Duck toilet cleaner

According to the Bangkok Post article he's not regarded as the main suspect because they still wait for the lab analysis of the stuff that was used on the victims. If it is not Duck toilet cleaner the main guy is still on the loose.

Serial chemical attacker? who does the editing on these newspapers, mickey mouse? I know it's pretty asinine to splash someone with a toilet bowl cleanser, but c'mon, this is not John Wayne Gacy or Jeffery Dahmer. What are the BIB going to do, shoot him down in the street? This is not even news worthy.

Why doesn't this surprise me?

Yes, but doesn't it make us feel safer learning police officers know the difference between acid and base and a psychiatrist concurs that whoever it might be is a deranged individual?

Right, it's sensationalizing and not at all newsworthy if'n you don't live in Bangkok or dare go out

Not news worthy? Plenty of Bangkok residents would disagree with you.

I heard he was actually spraying Chang and the Police mistook it for Toilet cleaner, hence the Chemical analogy ! smile.png

Yes, it is newsworthy to inform women that in certain parts of town there is a nut job throwing chemicals that can blind and disfigure them. If that is not news worthy...what is? Poorly written? Perhaps. A bit sensationalized? A little...but common in the news business. Of course, since the victims are women, and Thai...you are in no danger...so whats the big deal...right? I do hope someday you discover a news feed called "News that is all about me."

If you don't think someone throwing caustic chemical into the face of women is not news, I wonder how newsworthy you'd think it if the culprit threw the chemical in your face.

Well the trick cyclist got it right, unless you think spraying toilet bowl cleaner on people because you are not respected is sane and logical behaviour.

PS: If this whack job threw anything at my wife...and I found him...there would be no need to worry about the BIB gunning him down. Headline: "Chemical Attacker falls from Overpass"

OK, when someone does the same criminal thing over and over again such as murder, rape or mugging, the perpetrator is called a serial murderer, serial rapist or serial mugger. Now we have someone splashing an unknown but potentially harmfull liquid repeatedly on people. Seems to me that calling him a serial chemical attacker is quite appropriate. You seem to downplay the seriousness of this act due to the chemical being initially reported to be 'Duck' toilet bowl cleaner; or maybe only toilet bowl cleaner in your eyes. Speaking of assinine, go and get some Duck and splash it in your eyes and come back and tell us how that felt. Or maybe less assinine, just stick your hand in some Duck for a few minutes and see if you can type rubbish as easily as before. You suggest this isn't newsworthy. I suggest you would be crying like a babe if this happened to you or an acquantance of yours and you found out after the fact that it had happened several times before but wasn't reported due to... apathy?

In the meantime, what do you suggest we should call him?

You know...some might see this post and not recognize that in it, you have actually created a potential profile of the idiot doing this. That is an interesting thought. Yes, it does happen there, and worth some consideration by investigators reviewing films of the areas of attack. There is no saying where a fool like this my come from, Thailand, Europe, the US...etc...but this behavior is reported more often in some parts of India / Pakistan. Interesting thought.

Dear Khoawongt... Looks like we all agree, you either got up on the wrong side this morning. or are in need of psychiatric counselling. Only a dyed in the wool misogynist could read this and not see it is wrong, dangerous, could escalate and is most news worthy. Wow. Throwing acid in women's faces is not news worthy. ??? Really ??? Please enlighten us, what is? Jet ski operators are a bit shady? It is hard to get a taxi when it rains? Some policemen take bribes? Extra extra...read all about it ??? Edited by RichardinBKK

Wikipedia is your friend....

These attacks are most common in Cambodia,[8] Afghanistan,[9] India,[10] Bangladesh,[5][6] Pakistan[5] and other nearby countries.

From same the same article.

In Cambodia, it was reported that these attacks were mostly carried out by wives against their husbands' lovers.

A truly truly horrific crime ,with the attackers seldom punished. I think these countries need to pass a law that the perpetrator of an attack like this will suffer the same fate by having acid poured on his/her face.

isn't this a widespread practise origination from pakistan/india ? where the rejected mail sprays battery acid in the woman that does not want him ?

I think your comment is in violation of rule 7) at least that's what I was told last time I made a comment about a group of soul brothers....Thaivisa are trying to be 'correct' in every possible way these days! Maybe you will get away with this one, lets wait and see
