[Myanmar] Un Envoy In Sittwe To Assess Situation

Vijay Nambiar, a special adviser to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, visited the Arakan State capital Sittwe on Wednesday to assess the situation in the area after nearly two weeks of communal conflict between Buddhists and Muslims. “We’re here to observe and assess how we can continue to provide support to [Arakan State],†said Ashok Nigam, a UN resident and humanitarian coordinator who was also in the group, according to a report by AFP. Last week, the UN evacuated most of its foreign staff from the state as the death toll in clashes continued to climb.
