Below are the current requirements for an extension as listed on the Pattaya City Expats Club website. They keep up to date on any changes.

3. Passport (original) with at least 6 months remaining validity

.

If this (only need 6 months left in passport) is true, this is promising news for me. I will have to apply for an extension of my non-immigrant O-A based on retirement in August. Will Thai immigration grant me a one-year extension with only 10 months left on my passport?

I haven't decided whether to renew my Canadian passport in Thailand or wait till I return to Canada. Some people I have talked to said authorities will not give me the extension with less than a year left.

They will give you the extension, but the extension will only be until the date your passport expires. When you have a new passport you can go back to immigration and get the rest of the one year period.

The bank letter was not necesarry.

Has anyone had a retirement extension at the Jomtien immigration recently. If you are using the 65,000 baht a month income option is the Bank letter NOT now required. I am doing mine soon so would rather not get the letter if it's not needed.

You'll need photocopies of ALL previous extension stamps that are in your passport. Otherwise good.

Really? Is that new? Have been doing retirement extensions at Jomtien for years and unless that is a new thing, I don't believe it.

No, not needed. What about all thos people whose extensions go back several passports like mine. Never been asked for them.

This was not so in my case. I had a one year extension 10 months before the expiry date. When my new passport arrived 6 moths later I just went to immigration and they copie the stamps across. No hassle.

It should have been and I suspect it was as stated by Sophon. Can you check old passport? Extension should be until expiration date of that passport and when new obtained notation of passport change/old visa and the full time of the one year extension is stamped into the new passport.

A bank letter has never been required if you are using the 65K baht income option.

Immigration has been known to ask for proof that you have brought some money in the country by way of showing a bank book or ATM slips.

It is only needed if your are using 800K bank option or the combination of both income and money in the bank option.

It was required by Jomtien when I got my first extension 2 years ago. A bank account showing at least 5000 baht AND a bank letter.

A couple of questions related to this thread...

I have a retirement visa "extension" issued in Jomtien last August. I also have a multi-entry permit. The extension expires next month.

Can I apply for another one year multi-entry permit before the expiration?

Or, do I have to apply for a new one year extension (with all req. docs) and a new multi-entry permit?

Also...

I need to make a 90-day report prior to July 15.

Do you think the Jomtiern office will allow me to apply for my new extension (and/or multi-entry permit) at this time (my extension ends Aug. 25)?

Thanks for your input.

Jomtiem is known to allow to apply up to 2 months early. But regardless, you will need to do your 990 day report. An extension of stay is not considered a 90 day report, only the first extension is considered as such.

You apply for the multiple re-entry permit when you apply for the extension of stay, or after that.

You could apply for a new multi re-entry but it would only be valid until current permitted to stay date so normally you would wait until your new extension (unless you travel every other day).

I don't understand the above. He already has a multiple re-entry permit that is valid until the day his permission to stay expires. I'm pretty sure if he tried to purchase another before getting an extension to his permission to stay, the Immigration Officer would say "no, cannot".

You are right - brain not register the part that he already had a mutl. He can however obtain as soon as a new extension is granted as that will take over from the current one.

That poses an interesting question. If I get an extension one month in advance of the expiration of my permission to stay and I buy a re-entry permit to match it, what happens if I travel out of Thailand and return before the new extension and Re-Entry permit take effect? When I fill in the Arrival card, I should put the number of the previous Re-Entry Permit, right? If they were both single entry, that would be important. Wouldn't want to waste 1,000 baht.

Posted

Your extension is effective when stamped into your passport and supersedes the original. Re-entry permit will do the same. You enter the new re-entry permit and get stamped for the new extension of stay time.

That's a useful detail to know. Thx.

I intend to come to Thailand and obtain the retirement extension but do not want to enter into a long-term lease agreement because I want to keep on travelling for a while before settling down. Will Jomtien Immigration accept a hotel invoice or similar documentation as proof of address?

It's not clear from what you've written so I will say you do need to obtain a Thai non-immigrant visa in your home country in order to eventually apply for an extension onec the visa runs out.

Otherwise, Jomtien immigration accepted my True-H Mobile phone bill as proof of address for my extension application. I did bring the apartment lease along just in case. Maybe you could rent an apartment for a couple of months to establish a presence in Thailand.

I intend to enter Thailand from Australia initially for 30 days without a visa. Applying for a visa at the Thai Embassy in Australia is too cumbersome and expensive.

At the moment I only have a prepaid phone (and want to keep it that way) and believe that the phone company only has my passport details rather than an address. So this won't work.

But will a short-term lease of a few weeks be accepted? As I mentioned I want to travel for a while before settling down, most probably in Pattaya.

First though, CeeBee you did not say if you have a visa. If you're just entering the country and leaving within 30 days (visa exemption, depending on your nationality), then you don't have to concern yourself about addresses.

Posted

It should be accepted but you appear to require change of status as well as extension for retirement so they might be more picky if busy or in a bad mood. You should easily be able to obtain a single entry non immigrant O visa by mail from an Honorary Consulate such as Brisbane I would think - unless you do not have time.

I intend to follow the 2-step process to gain a retirement extension. I believe there is only the Thai Embassy in Canberra left.

Brisbane is open for business AFAIK. Perth is the only recent Consulate closing that I have knowledge. Without a visa or onward ticket you will likely have issues boarding aircraft from Oz to Thailand so I would check about getting visa first.
