BANGKOK, Aug 3 -- Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday signed the Announcement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Kingdom of Thailand and the State of Palestine.

According to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two countries decided to establish diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level on Aug 1.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Amman, Jordan will be accredited to Palestine and the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia will be accredited to Thailand until an embassy is opened in Bangkok.

Thailand’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jullapong Nonsrichai earlier said that the establishment of diplomatic relations will be a good starting point for the development of Thai-Palestinian relations for mutual benefit.

He said it would be the beginning of further cooperation, which at present is limited to technical cooperation. (MCOT online news)

Impressive, now for some action. Though I doubt it will be any more than rhetoric designed to improve trading relations with Malaysia and Indonesia. Better than nothing, but a long way from active participation which is what Palestine needs from a world leading government.

if it is to improve trading relations with Malaysia, than this is already a long way.

I recall that Thaksin did not great the Malaysian Minister once. On an interview he told that the "Proton" can't be imported to Thailand as its quality isn't good enough for Thai people....

etc etc etc 100 similar nonsense from him.

It is interesting to hear this point of view. I do know a number of Thai firms actively pursuing meaningful export relationships with businesses in Malaysia. Considering the Malaysian stand on Palestine and Israeli visitors this might actually signify a change in the regional business attitude to come into line with the ASEAN agreements. As far as I remember at this time Thaksin is not actually an official representative of Thailand and it would be well within the rights of the present Thai business/political system to exploit changes that are proposed in the ASEAN agreements whilst ignoring the back-room dealings. Some Malaysian businesses will hedge their bets as for the outcome of the present "will he/won't he" situation.

That'll please the Jews.

That occured to me as well, and indirectly Thai/US relations, as we all know about the relationship between Israel & US

I wonder is TAT have been advised...their tourism number and attracting quality tourist will take a hit...whistling.gif

Lets face it Israeli tourist do come to Thailand...how many Palestinians come to Thailand, dont have the money and Israel doesnt let them out the country anyway...rolleyes.gif

very cool... but the USA and Israel will maybe have issues with Thailand now....(not towing the new world order platform and denying PALS the rights they are not getting from Israel) .....and also the not letting the USA use U Tapo airport for the "weather NASA recog" planes. Which may have been innocent weather stuff but may also have not been.... sad to say but the USA is losing it's respectability around the planet ... by the day.. drone attacks - saying that any 16 year killed in Afgan or Pak was a terrorist anyway... and I happen to be a Yank...oops ... say HI to the guys ..they are watching and listening to everything..... the war on terror is here now and coming to everywhere people still want to have peace and freedom.... like Thailand

steve

thailand...been here 11 years... have thai wife and family... do not want to see everything go to H*** in a handbasket over eveil ways of eveil people

So a nasa scientific exploration needs debate in parliament, but was this?
Very good question

Might make an interesting political show if someone complains. Given the large number of votes the Dems get from the south and very few for PT, the dems would be on a hiding to nothing if they try and cause trouble over it.

Personally I don't take sides about the Jews and Palestinians, believe they should be left to themselves to sort it all out one way or another. However the US supporting Israel has dragged the West into the whole chronic mess and created the fascist western security states where we now have to undergo internal body searches etc every time we fly home. Mind you am getting quite fond of that rubber glove massaging the prostate, but that is another story perhaps best left for the more sympathetic CM forum.

Thailand needs to make its own decisions and I have no attitude one way or the other, but it will be a political decision with economic ramifications that are seen as profitable to the governing elite. It has nothing to do with the South and certainly nothing to do with supporting Palestine, doubt the Thais could care less.

Is Palestine qualified to be called a "state"?

Not according to this informed article,

Is Palestine a state? The International Criminal Court (ICC) answered this question this week, and said no.

The Palestinian Authority, apparently calling itself the “Government of Palestine,” tried to lodge a complaint against Israel at the ICC. As American courts would do, the ICC first had to decide if it had jurisdiction. As its statement notes, the ICC has jurisdiction over a matter only when the UN Security Council or a “state” provide it. So is “Palestine” a state?

The Court’s answer was no, as it explained:

The Office has been informed that Palestine has been recognised as a State in bilateral relations by more than 130 governments and by certain international organisations, including United Nation bodies. However, tthe current status granted to Palestine by the United Nations General Assembly is that of “observer”, not as a “Non‐member State”. The Office understands that on 23 September 2011, Palestine submitted an application for admission to the United Nations as a Member State in accordance with article 4(2) of the United Nations Charter, but the Security Council has not yet made a recommendation in this regard.

Two comments are worth making. First, the ICC’s prosecutor, Luis Moreno Ocampo, should be congratulated for upholding legal standards despite obvious political pressures. He went by the book. Moreno Ocampo’s nine year term ends in June, and his successor, Fatou Bensouda of Gambia, should be equally careful and judicious. As she has been his deputy since 2004, one can hope that this will be the case.

Second, the Palestinian failure in the United Nations last year is what produced this dismissal of their complaint. They did not seek the status of “non-member state” from the General Assembly but insisted on having full membership in the UN as a sovereign state accorded by the Security Council. This the United States rightly blocked, preventing the PLO from attaining the necessary number of Security Council votes even to require an American veto in order to block their plan. The PLO is reaping what its diplomacy sowed in 2011.

You might be right as the Islamic militant terrorists in Thailand have not been as successful as the Palistinian ones in making out a good case for their 'homeland' And in Thailand it is not a religious war, as it has been in the middle east, even though the favorite targets of the insurgents here has been Buddhist monks. The Arab/Jew problem was never about land but religion, some people seem to be too brainwashed to see it though. It will be news to many that one terrorist group is already free and the one here is 'oppressed' or is it the other way around, what a joker you are.

In the third line of the above, it would be helpful if you posted observations that reflect reality, it's you who is brainwashed
