A statue of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was unveiled in the Indian border town of Moreh on Wednesday to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Burma’s uprising against military rule on Aug. 8, 1988. The statue was commissioned by the Solidarity Committee for Burma Democracy Manipur, according to the Imphal Free Press, based in the Manipur State capital of Imphal. At a ceremony to mark the unveiling, the group said that Suu Kyi, who has been internationally recognized as a democracy icon, follows the same path of non-violence as Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi.
