US man accidentally calls 911 during drug deal

Many of us have had an embarrassing case of "dam_n you auto correct", but one US man's mobile mess up has landed him in jail.

SCRANTON: -- Justin Kryzanowski, 24, was in the middle of a drug deal when the phone in his pocket inadvertently connected to 911, allowing authorities to record the entire conversation and trace him to an apartment in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The 911 operators called police to say they had an open line to a drug deal in a car involving a man named "Rick", Scranton's Times-Tribune reported.

Police went to an apartment where they found Mr Kryzanowski talking with slurred speech.

There were also drugs and syringes "in plain sight" and brass knuckles, as well as a mobile phone matching the number connected to 911, the newspaper reported. [more...]

If only more crims were this stupid.

If only the police would go after some real criminals instead of waisting time and tax money with cases like that.

Yep I agree but if someone is so stupid as to call 911 during a drug deal, what choice do the police have? Ignore it? Say oh this small stuff? They had no choice but to investigate and probably best for all this dumb a*s is nicked.

America really does have some of the dumbest criminals as th T.V show suggests! one can only guess from the article that the man was a heroin user in which case knuckle dusters are kind of irrelevant to a man who if left a little longer wouldn't of even been able to stand up let alone resist arrest.

for god sake, they caught him with suboxone.. it's rare for it to be used recreationally, it's to help people get off heroin.

so they more than likely caught a guy trying to get himself off heroin.

i know they had to do their jobs etc. just saying it kinda takes the fun out of it for me.

knowing that it's a requirement for phones to be able to be remotely activated in order to receive FCC approval, its purely because it was provoked that the bothered reacting to such a minor incident, the guy is likely not a first time offender and would easily have been apprehended with drugs at any given moment if the true purpose of the law enforcement was realized...

I remember an episode of America's Stupidest Criminals where the guy tried to cheat a lottery ticket to win a hundred bucks and it turned out his ticket had won over a thousand. He did the time and never got the prize.

Sorry to go off topic a bit, but the FCC does not require remote activation of cellular (radio) telephones.

What the FCC does require of the cellular telephone companies is to have the ability to closely determine the location of a cellular (radio communications device) telephone. This can be done either through the GPS capability of a cell phone or through TDOA capability of three or more cellular base stations, if the required number of base stations can all receive the cell phone signal at the same time.

So "Mr Kryzanowski" butt dials 911 and the 911 operators want to know what his emergency is. "Mr Kryzanowski" does not respond to their questions but does provide enough information for them to recognize a drug deal in progress. The 911 center determines the approximate location of the cell (radio transmitter) phone from the cell (2 way radio communication provider) phone company data passed to the 911 center and dispatches the local police department (Scranton PD) who probably has several police cruisers, cruise through the area until they locate a likely suspect "Mr Kryzanowski".blink.png

The 911 operator probably had no way of knowing who was making the call or the circumstances of the caller. In a worst case scenario, the caller could have been someone being held against their will during a drug deal.

Prudent thing to do with 911 calls is to investigate.

Expect to hear A LOT more stories like this from now on.

But they are no way as entertaining of the stories borne of sheer stupidity, like the guy in the US who called the local police to report that the cleaning lady at his hotel stole his stash.

We had exactly the same in Melbourne, a guy walked into our Police Station to report a burglary, his hydroponics setup had been stolen along with his plants and dried material. Subsequently got charged with cultivate, possess, intent to traffick and use also theft (electricity)
