The relatives of 92 Thai nationals who were arrested in Burma’s Kawthoung Township on July 4 for illegally encroaching on Burmese territory were allowed to visit the prisoners for the first time on Thursday. According to the Bangkok-based newspaper The Nation, the Thai authorities arranged the visit by the 86 family members, who were allowed to spend four hours, from 9 am to 1 pm, with the detainees. Thailand’s government is seeking a pardon for the Thais, who have been sentenced to three- and-a-half years in prison for illegally clearing a forest in Burmese territory.
